Chicago has some great angles... and some like this.

Never understood Manhattan coming second behind Chi-town in skyline polls etc. Just no comparison.

All cities have unflattering angles. The picture you show up there that land is currently ACTIVELY slated for massive development. The thing about Chicago's skyline is its balance. Supertalls framed by bookend supertalls... this in addition to the fact that Chicago is the city that built the very first skyscraper in history... it has a river canyon (skyscrapers framing the river) running through the city... it has submerged trains (subways) but elevated trains running through its downtown (something Manhattan does NOT have)... and it is naturally framed by beaches that are literally less than a 100 feet away from supertall structures... totally unique that way. So as you see, it is a more of nuanced argument... not just sheer numbers of buildings... and in such a nuanced "beauty in the eye of the beholder" scenario, yes, Chicago's skyline can be chosen ahead of NY.

I love NY's skyline. That said, I have heard it said that its spires are clustered together to one side of the city (throwing off the balance of its skyline), it now has a giant middle finger pointing up over central park and a giant hole (midtown) in the middle of its skyline. As great as Manhattan's skyline is, those flaws can objectively be pointed out. But are they inherent flaws or just unflattering angles? That can be debated. One thing is clear though... because NY has those flaws/angles some will use that to argue that it takes away from the greatness of its skyline -- just like the unflattering picture/angle you posted of Chicago.

In sum, no skyline is perfect and this Chi vs NY thing you reference goes in cycles. There have been times in history where I would give the edge to Chicago...
and times where I would give the edge to NY. Chicago has some great skyscrapers currently under construction but right now if I had to choose, this second, I would give the edge to NY. For me, that could change or it could remain like that for a number of years to come. Some feel differently and would give the edge to Chicago. Either way, that's the great thing about being a free human being -- each person is free to choose and people are free to see things differently. That does not make one opinion right and another opinion wrong.

Not slagging Chi-town. But NYC (usually Manhattan only) is very tough to photograph because it's skyscraper footprint is so huge.

NYC has twice the 500+ towers than Chicago does and much of that pops out of a 10 to 20 storey "foundation". Unbelievable density at street level.

NYC may not win every skyline photo contest with the Second (third?) City but if you had isometric drawings that captured much more than a camera lens can... NYC would dwarf Chicago. Been to both places so just an opinion.

I appreciate what you say here but it appears you (no disrespect intended) either did not read what I wrote or misunderstood my post. My post pointed out that the reason some people choose Chicago over NY is not about numbers of towers (a game Chicago cannot play against NY) but Chicago is often chosen #1 because of its symmetry, balance, beauty, setting, height in relation to number of towers, history, etc. If it were all about numbers of buildings the US would lose to many Asian cities hands down. Go check out some PANORAMIC skyline photos of Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc. You will see an endless sea of towers. So many that there is not an accurate count as to just how many exist. Towers so plentiful and vast that even NY cannot compare. That said, I would still choose NY over most of those cities. Just like I would choose Chicago over most of those cities.

See, its not all about numbers for some people. But if that is all that matters to you then you will vote for NY (or one of the Asian cities I mentioned) every time. No problem. That is your right to do so. For other people... people who take other factors into consideration... they may vote for Chicago.

Don't disagree with any of your comments of course.

Dubai overwhelms constantly reaching for the moon but it's a 3 block wide strip of Disneyland where most towers are frankly awful (not old Dubai of which is worth a visit).

Does Dubai photograph well - sure always.

Chinese cities that have bloomed from farmer's fields are astonishing but the paint is still drying.

I guess what I'm saying is my eye is skewed by actual visits to Manhattan and Chicago when it comes to these skyline sports. I live in a construction zone called Toronto which in a smaller way also can't be photographed as it's emerging skyline ebbs and flows south to north for 5 miles.... usually blocked by ubiquitous waterfront tower skyline shots.

I just realized I have added nothing to the actual discussion lol - go Chicago, go NYC.

Perfect explanation for why Chicago always tops my list of favourite skylines.
