Personally I prefer it to the way some cities do it. In america lots of tall buildings are just naamed after their address

Oh and by the way London Bridge Tower is now named Shard/London Bridge

'The Shard' nickname was given by English Heritage and reports who didn't like it. It was a very popular name and the developers have now adopted it

Dont forget the gherkin! Thats quite "stupid" as well even though it really looks like a gherkin, on the other hand The shard really looks like a shard so...
In Gothenburg we have nick-name for our "skyscraper" as well, its called the lipstick, and it looks like so:

Maybe some people think it looks like a lipstick since its red, hehe i dont know, its really ugly though!

Arn't all towers just phallic symbols of male insecurity/compensation -like big cars?!? Wonder what the % of male/females are that go on this site.

Dubai, Hong Kong, New York= big towers, small ****
London, Paris, Rome = small towers, big ****

haha. hi there... im the guy who came up with the cheesegrater and helterskelter. does it happen just in london? well i think its cool to give a tower a stupid but catchy name, the public can relate to it much better and it makes tall buildings friendlier. the real reason i did it was that things were starting to appear from my website in the press plagarised so i decided to tag some buildings with silly nicknames. sure enough the nicknames appeared in the newspaper articles...

well i do see your point about it making tall building being more friendlyer but dnt you think that people may not be able to take them as a serious place e.g. " where do you work?" "i work at the cheese grater"

see what i mean.
