Thoughts on why Smokin Joe's is bothering downtown businesses, seemingly on purpose?

A FIGHT SONG IN NIAGARA FALLS

Source: The Buffalo News, by Aaron Besecker, January 26, 2016

Quote:
There's a bizarre musical mystery in downtown Niagara Falls: Someone's been blaring a college fight song out of a vacant building for months, bothering surrounding businesses and residents.

The music is the University of Iowa fight song.

The story, reported by the Niagara Gazette on Sunday, was picked up by Deadspin on Monday night.

Nobody has been able to figure out who's playing it or why it's being played.

The building where the sounds are originating, at the corner of Third Street and Ferry Avenue, is owned by Thunderfalls LLC. The company lists its business address on Saunders Settlement Road in Sanborn at Smokin Joe's Trading Post., which sells untaxed gasoline and cigarettes among its wares. Thunderfalls also used to operate a bar nearby on Third Street called Club Malibu.

Those are all business endeavors of Joseph M. "Smokin Joe" Anderson, who also owns other downtown properties, including a hotel and a former "snow park," which has been converted into an "adventure park" offering zip lines and a ropes course.

As the Gazette pointed out, the Iowa fight song gets looped more than 500 times a day. Be thankful you aren't subjected to that.

Also take into account that the two cities kind of competed against each other, and have competed in recent times in sports still. Consider that Buffalo's and Rochester's minor league baseball teams are in the same league (with Syracuse, by the way). Consider, as well, that Rochester once had an NBA team (at the same time as Syracuse having an NBA team), and Buffalo had its own team later on. While Buffalo and Rochester (or Syracuse) never overlapped, owners and the league certainly saw distinct metropolitan areas that could each pull in their own fans.

Syracuse May Merge With Onondaga County to Become Upstate NY's Largest City.

The plan to merge Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse is the proposal drawing the most attention. The idea is supported by county officials, including Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney.

Under the plan, towns and villages would be given the option of joining the new metropolitan government. It would be up to the individual governments to decide whether to maintain the status quo or merge with the city and county.

The concept was cited by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a major reason why central New York won $500 million in the state's Upstate Revitalization Initiative competition. The regional council included "government modernization" as one of its six key points.

Former U.S. Rep. Jim Walsh, who chairs Consensus with Murphy and Catherine Richardson, a retired attorney, said rebalancing and rethinking government is needed.

"We've studied and talked with other communities, like Indianapolis, Louisville and others, who have been through this and are now reaping the benefits of increased economic growth and opportunity," he said. "Working together as one community we can make this happen here in Onondaga County."

It would have been nice if you included the link!

I hope Buffalo one-ups Syracuse in the coming years and merges with Erie County (or parts of it), but I have my doubts.

A sales tax-free downtown? Rocco Termini pushing for it

Quote:
Could a large portion of downtown Buffalo be a “sales tax free zone” for retailers?

At least one prominent business leader thinks so.

Developer Rocco Termini thinks its time to again discuss lifting the sales tax in downtown Buffalo.

Rocco Termini, a developer with a vast number of downtown holdings in his portfolio, has suggested that a sales tax free zone in downtown might be enough to help encourage more retailers to open their doors in the central business district.
“This is the time to do it,” Termini said.

Downtown Buffalo is undergoing a development renaissance, fueled by private-sector investments that have brought old buildings back to life, new residents and a growing number of freshly-opened restaurants. What has lagged behind is retail development, save for four stores inside the HarborCenter and a few that opened thanks to the Queen City Pop-Up program initiated by the Buffalo Urban Development Corp.

The County can already make it zero on clothing if it so desires. There is no State sales tax on most clothing. Only the County portion remains. Erie should follow the lead of NYC and even nearby Chautauqua County and drop the 4.75% Erie County Sales Tax on clothing. That would be a good test for Rocco's idea.

I read an article in BizJournals about the hot real estate market and declining vacancy rate, and it went into details about the vacancy rate in the warehouse sector. It's at around 3%, whereas in Rochester it's around 10%.

Warehouses aren't sexy, I know, but why doesn't our area have more of them? If you go to any major city the highways are flanked by blocks and blocks of warehouses and light industrial parks. The only areas that have this in the Buffalo area are along the North French Road corridor in Amherst, a few warehouses in East Aurora along the 400 and some along Walden and in South Buffalo.

You would think that because Buffalo is the last major U.S. city to Toronto that there would be a greater emphasis on product and material storage here.

11 Reasons to Go to Buffalo in 2016

The past few years have been very kind to Buffalo, a city that has experienced too much heartbreak over the past half-century. But things are changing and 2016 looks to be the Queen City's year.

I thought this was the Onion when I clicked on the link. Do I need a graphic to illustrate?

No twerking on the dance floor, say Iroquois school officials

Quote:
Grinding and twerking are banned on the dance floor of Iroquois High School, where students also are tested for alcohol consumption.

But unlike some schools that have canceled all dances, the district is not considering that, and has issued “New Dance Rules” that codify the current policy and address issues that came up at the homecoming dance in October.

The newly issued rules were triggered by “circumstances at the last dance,” according to Superintendent Douglas Scofield, who declined to describe the behavior.

“There were 100 students there and two of them misbehaved,” he said. “Most of our students behave very, very appropriately.”

Number 10 of the list of 11 rules dated Jan. 1 states: “Student dancing may not include bodily grinding or twerking. If inappropriate dancing occurs, these students will be asked to leave the dance.”

Twerking may be the current generation’s equivalent to the jitterbug and the twist, with its ability to shock and offend adults. Scofield said the district always has prohibited sexually suggestive moves on the dance floor, and reminds students at annual assemblies.

National Geographic calls Niagara Falls the #2 vista in the world:
http://travel.nationalgeographic.com...top-10/vistas/

Which vistas have you been to? I've been to all four of the American (/Canadian border) vistas, but nothing on any other continent.

Well I've been to both, but I can't remember the last time I visited the American side and actually walked around it.

Anyone ever been to Buffalo Tap Room on Eggert Road at Sheridan Drive? My grandfather likes going there pretty often, and I've had a chance to join him. Their beers are made by CB Craft Brewers in Honeoye Falls, apparently, under the Buffalo Tap Room name.

Yeah, when people who live in tiny villages and school districts fight tooth and nail against dissolving (even though residents would pay much less in taxes), it's a red flag that most people in the Buffalo area would much rather stay in their little enclaves than help the community at large.

A City Data forum user wondered where all of the Buffalo development discussion was happening. Though I didn't refer to this site by name, I don't think that thread will gain much traction.
