Miami-Dade shrinking Metrorail hours as ridership dips

BY DOUGLAS HANKS
[email protected]
MAY 15, 2017

Miami-Dade plans to trim Metrorail hours next week as part of a cost-cutting plan, closing down an hour earlier on weeknights and cutting back weekend service.

Instead of ending at midnight, Metrorail will close at 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Metrorail will also scratch longer weekend hours announced last fall, with trains ending at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays instead of 2 a.m. Instead of starting at 5 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, the first trains will leave their stations at 6 a.m.

Metrorail also will roll back expanded service of the new Orange Line, the three-mile extension that opened in 2012 and connects Miami International Airport with the rest of the system. In October, Miami-Dade announced Orange Line trains would start arriving every 15 minutes on weekends, instead of every 30 minutes. On Monday, the Orange Line will revert to trains arriving at 30-minute intervals.

With gas prices low and the job market strong, public transit has been seeing declines nationwide. In Miami-Dade, Metrorail ridership is down about 6 percent this year, while bus boardings are down about 10 percent. Compounding the problem: a slump in sales taxes, including the half-percent tax that subsidizes the transit system.

The bridge is nice and it will become iconic, but for $800 Million I would prefer a tunnel from I95 to Watson Island, a nice promenade above it and an Iconic pedestrian bridge to replace the McArthur...just wishing..

Yeah. In the long run I think that would have been worth it even at triple the price.
Delaying to look at the last two proposals further is a waste of time, its time to get on with it.

I would definitely have preferred to bury I-395 even if it were more expensive. The additional real estate could've produced some revenue for the city/state cutting in to the cost

How many miles of metrorail could have been build with that same amount of bridge money... or any of the other megaprojects we waste it on (marlins stadium, HOV flyover for I-95 at Golden Glades interchange)

For a city so broke and unable to pay for mass transit to fix our traffic problems... we sure have an amazing capacity to find ways to waste money we "supposedly" don't have. *sigh*

Well it is the FDOT who is wasting money on this "signature" bridge ( somehow a Signature bridge to me recalls the Brooklyn, Golden Gate , etc. over water.) not something over Biscayne Blvd.
A beautiful suspension bridge between downtown & South Beach would be phenomenal instead ( residents of Palm, Hibiscus & Star islands can get home via their boats !)
As for how many miles of Metrorail could $800 Million dollars of FDOT money build ?
At a cost of $100-200 Million dollars per mile somewhere between 4-8 miles.
That would put Metrorail either into South Dade, west to FIU / Sweetwater or up to Aventura.

Correct. I don't know how many times it needs to be said. It is state money for highway/infrastructure work that if it is not spent on here it will be spent elsewhere in the state. That money can't be diverted to local rail.

I can be said as many times as you want, but it will be wasted breath. I already knew it can't be diverted... that wont stop me from ruminating on how much money this town wastes (not just on highways but other frivolous things). Weather this amount or that amount can or can't be diverted is irrelevant to me. We need to keep voicing our opinions loudly in town halls and public hearings (and yes even of forums like this one) of our disapproval of how they are spending our tax money (state as well as local).

We should hold our public officials more to account if we wish for a better society rather that defeatedly telling ourselves "oh well nothing can be done about this or that due to rules beyond our control". Voicing our opinions collectively is the first step in taking back that control. Not complacently telling ourselves there was nothing we could do.

Just IMO. Not meaning to complain so much, I just get frustrated as the years go by and so do the opportunities.

The single secret ingredient to unsnarl downtown’s traffic
http://www.miamitodaynews.com/2017/0...towns-traffic/
Quote:
That answer is – drum roll, please – what seems to be the City of Miami’s lowest priority: enforce the traffic laws.

That would mean ticketing drivers who enter an intersection in heavy traffic and sit there as the light turns red, waiting for traffic ahead to get moving. How many times have you sat grumbling as that blocking of the box road-blocked your whole lane?

Then there are the cars and delivery trucks that double park illegally as drivers duck into a building on some errand that cuts traffic lanes in half until they return.

Looks like the potential stops have already been picked.

Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit stops picked out
http://www.miamitodaynews.com/2017/0...-stops-picked/

While many details about the six corridors of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit plan remain to be worked out, the county’s Transportation & Public Works Department has identified tentative stops along all of the routes.
Speaking before the Transportation Planning Organization’s Fiscal Priorities Committee, Albert Hernandez, department assistant director, said many of the stops dovetail with existing transit.

On the 9.7-mile Miami to Miami Beach corridor, an extension of Metromover is being considered, with a potential station at Museum Park and 10 stations on Miami Beach.
“These are the locations based on the latest study by the City of Miami Beach,” he said. “The benefit is that we can leverage our existing system and it doesn’t interfere with local traffic alignment.”Station locations would include Washington and Meridian avenues, and 7th, 10th and 14th streets, Lincoln Road and the Miami Beach Convention Center. The service’s westbound leg would land in Wynwood with seven stations at locations yet to be determined.

The 11-mile east-west corridor’s 10 stations would start at the Miami Intermodal Center and ending at the Tamiami Campus of Florida International University. The university station would abut a bus facility on Southwest Eighth Street.
“We’re retrofitting a garage to put the bus terminal right in front of the rail,” Mr. Hernandez said.

The 10-mile Kendall corridor’s 10 stations would connect the Dadeland Metrorail South Station to a planned park-and-ride facility at Southwest 162nd Avenue. The county is also opening a park-and-ride lot next month at Southwest 127th Avenue. “We already have service in this corridor,” he said. “These decisions were made based on ridership and density.”

The 9.2-mile north corridor along Northwest 27th Avenue would have seven stations, he said, beginning at the Dr. Martin Luther King Metrorail station and continuing to the Miami-Dade/Broward County line at Northwest 215th Street. Stations are contemplated at Northwest 82nd Street, the north campus of Miami Dade College, in Opa-locka, and on Northwest 166th, 183rd, 199th and 215th streets.

Good to hear.

I'm eagerly looking forward to the next transit study!

Just to be safe and cover all the bases, I really think a study of the past study is called for before we start a new study.

But I'm still studying the issue.

I-395 decision is getting ugly as can be expected when Politicians aren't given as say (they whine like little children):
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/loca...151140907.html

Quote:
Controversial I-395 reconstruction bid comes under more fire

The second-ranked team in the bidding for the Interstate 395 reconstruction said Wednesday that it’s formally protesting state transportation officials’ selection of a competitor in a process that’s come under substantial fire.

Brian Newman, an attorney for the competition runner-up, a joint-venture team of Fluor-Astaldi-MCM, sent Florida Department of Transportation officials a letter notifying them of the impending bid protest. The formal protest will be filed within 10 days, Newman said in the letter.

Bid protests on government contracts are not unusual, but this one comes amid unusually public questions and complaints from local elected officials and other stakeholders involving FDOT’s handling of the bidding for the high-profile, $800 million project. The stakes are also unusually high, because the project is designed partly to help reconnect and revitalize portions of Overtown and downtown Miami blighted by construction of the expressway in the 1960s.

We need a study to study why there's been so many studies.

I demand there be fine meats and cheeses at the unveiling of this new study!

I am studying the possibility of including a study of Fine Meats and Cheeses in our next study.

A recent study showed a plurality of those studied in favor of cheese but still studying meat, but after studying the results I think a consensus will be reached.

Pending further study.

I take that one occasionally. Always crowded. Problem is it is so slow. Douglas Station to Miracle mile is not much faster than walking when you factor in that it was way to many stops.

In my case I took it a few blocks north of Miracle Mile at Madeira. I guess I was lucky, it did stop several times but I guess I was lucky, it only took about 15 minutes.

On another note, I've been taking the Rail for the last couple of weeks from Douglas and it is a can of sardines and today I was lucky enough to be in a car with no AC, apparently it's not uncommon for this. It was practically unbearable and I can see people being totally put off by it and finding an alternative if that happens often on your way to and from work.
