NY and California are employing advanced policing methods and technologies but many states still struggle with outdated policing models or simply lack the initiative to use them fully. This describes my state which has problems with violent crime but lacks the resources, expertise and techniques to proactively police rural areas. The biggest cities have more advantages here even though Chicago may have stumbled in their applications.

"The Back Porch", and what else? We need more names!

Exactly! The backyard is extra storage for all the crap that can't fit in the garage.

Joking.

I was thinking the same. People here hang out on front porches and front yards, the burbs do the back yard thing more.

+1 for front porch...

With regards to Tennessee and ranking the highest in the country for violent crimes...that is a pretty disturbing. I hope city officials don't take this lightly because that is definitely something you don't want your state to be known for.

The funny thing is...In the past 9 years of living in the Nashville area, I have never once felt unsafe anywhere at anytime...especially downtown. I just don't get how it could be more dangerous here, then walking down the streets of Chicago or NYC. Everytime I go downtown, the Police presence is so thick that it just feels safe to me. You wouldn't catch me walking around at 2am in the streets of Chicago if my life depended on it. Here...I dono...it just doesn't seem that way. Everyone seems friendly, and you just don't get the vibe of it being dangerous like in other big cities I have been to.

There must be something skewing these results. Maybe it's Memphis....

I won't put all the blame on Memphis, as it's not like we are crime free. But people usually don't think of crime when you think of Nashville. Memphis on the other hand...Well, let's just say it's had that reputation for quite some time now, and most people if you ask them what they think of Memphis, that's usually the first response you get from them.(not safe) I know it's not like that all over the city, but that reputation is there for a reason. We have our bad area's just like every other city, but you can't sit here and tell me that it's worse here than places like Chicago, NYC, Detroit, etc.

I find it odd that Illinois isn't mentioned on this list, as Chicago is the murder capitol of the US according to this recent article.

http://news.yahoo.com/chicago-murder...142122290.html

Cities with the most homicides in 2012

1. Chicago | 500
2. New York | 419
3. Detroit | 386
4. Philadelphia | 331
5. Los Angeles | 299
6. Baltimore | 219
7. Houston | 217
8. New Orleans | 193
9. Dallas | 154
10. Memphis | 133
11. Oakland | 126
12. Phoenix | 124
13. St. Louis | 113
14. Kansas City | 105
15. Indianapolis | 101
