It possibly gets in the way of Northern Hub works, but not sure.

Some more news on the boutique hotel on King Street

Boutique hotel plan for former King St bank

18th April 2013

COMMERCIAL Development Projects is set to win planning approval for a 66-bed hotel above Jamie Oliver's restaurant in Manchester.

The business, a division of Elland-based construction group Marshall, wants to convert the upper floors of the grade II-listed former Midland Bank building in King Street into a five-star boutique hotel. The operator has not been named but London-based Bespoke Hotels is a likely contender.

The Sir Edwin Lutyens-designed building, which was latterly an HSBC, has been empty since 2008 apart from the restaurant which opened last year. The original plan was to turn the upper floors into office space.

The centrepiece of the hotel will be a two-storey restaurant on the first and second floors. There will also be bars on the seventh and eighth floors which will make use of the building’s outdoor balconies.

A document prepared by planning adviser Deloitte Real Estate says the unnamed hotelier owns 84 hotels in the UK and 97 worldwide, with a total of 2,500 rooms. Its interests range from a spa hotel in the Cotswolds to a luxury retreat on the Caribbean island of Grenada which has a helipad.

A hotel fitting this description is the Mount Hartman Bay Estate, which is owned by London-based Bespoke. The company was founded in 2000 and is owned by Haydn Fentum and Robin Sheppard. Bespoke is already active in Manchester with serviced apartments under the Staying Cool brand, and The Light aparthotel block near the Arndale Centre. Elsewhere in the North West it has the Brook Meadow Hotel on the Wirral, Ennerdale Country House Hotel in Cleator, Cumbria, and the Royal Kings Arms in Lancaster.

A council document published ahead of the planning decision on Thursday recommends the scheme is approved.

Council officers said: "The proposal would restore and revitalise an unoccupied and important heritage asset. The proposed hotel along with the associated food and drink uses would contribute positively to Manchester’s hotel and entertainment offer and would attract more visitors to the city."

In separate news Starwood are to open a hotel in Liverpool. Hopefully this will kickstart or gently nudge forward Origin. I'm sure they are still interested in opening a W Hotel.

We are still waiting for the Manchester W hotel to be finished !
When I had lunch in Jamie's the other day the fire alarms kept going off , which they said was caused by the work men in the floors above , so they must have started some work on it already .

The Brown Bros. building (on the corner of Salford Cres & Trinity Way) now has the majority of windows in place. There finally seems to be some momentum slowly gathering around this side of the city.

Travelodge upgrades city sites

15th May 2013

TRAVELODGE has revamped two of its Manchester properties as part of a £200m investment programme.

The Manchester Central Arena site on Great Ducie Street and Manchester Trafford Park were among the first of 500 hotels from the Travelodge estate to benefit from the refurbishment, which includes a new room design and a luxury bed.

Travelodge Manchester Central Arena, a 200-room hotel which was opened in 2011, was refurbished in just over a month at a cost of £150,000 without any disturbance to day-to-day operations.

The 55-room hotel at Manchester Trafford Park took just two weeks to complete and means the Trafford Way hotel is one of the very first to feature the brand new room throughout the hotel.

Mark Williams, Manchester Central Arena Travelodge manager said: “The demand for good quality branded budget accommodation in Manchester is growing at great pace and now that we have a new room design we are offering even greater value in the local marketplace.”

By the end of the year, Travelodge plans to have refitted more than 50% of all its rooms, with 5,000 completed by the end of May alone. By autumn 2014, almost 90% of Travelodge’s estate will incorporate the new room design.

Radisson Blu hotel, Manchester Airport, to be transformed by £10m refurbishment project

by Janet Harmer

Wednesday 29th May 2013 12:00

One of the largest hotel investment programmes in the north of England has been launched at the 360-bedroom Radisson Blu property at Manchester Airport.

Work has begun to radically transform the property, at a cost of £10m, over the next two years. The hotel, which opened in 1998, will be fully refurbished over three phases, with the first phase already underway.

Richard Moore, area vice-president UK & Ireland of Carlson Rezidor, said that it is an exciting time for the hotel.

“The level of detail in the design and the thought processes behind the food and drink concept will create a real destination for our guests and the airport community,” he said.

Designed by Graven Images, the work currently underway includes the refurbishment of the hotel’s reception and lobby area, restaurant and bar, 120 Business Class bedrooms and suites, and 27 meeting rooms which make up the airport’s largest events space.

The hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, which boasts panoramic views of the airport, will double in size and include the creation of three zones, providing space for social, private and individual dining. Meanwhile, the bar will become an evolving destination throughout the day with live DJs in the evening.

The new design for the bedrooms aims to create an uncluttered and calming mood, with dark-stained ash timber, greys and silver grey wall coverings and fabrics, lifted by a rich violet highlight colour in cushions and bed throws.

Phase two of the programme covers an additional 120 guest bedrooms and will be completed in early 2014, with the remaining 120 bedrooms being covered in phase three in 2015 - when the project will be completed.

The Radisson Blu is the only hotel with a direct link to Manchester Airport.

Tweaks to NOMA hotel plan
12th June 2013

REVISED plans have been submitted for a £26m hotel development at The Co-op-led NOMA regeneration area of Manchester city centre.

Plans for a 178-bed hotel were approved in December 2011 at the site near Victoria Station that is partly occupied by the grade II-listed City Buildings and a former post office at the junction of Corporation St and Todd St.

A new application has been lodged with planners on behalf of The Co-op and hotel operator Sanguine Hospitality, to add a further nine rooms and make a number of other small changes.

The plans detail a 14-storey hotel with a restaurant and retail space incorporating the renovated City Buildings and a new, circular tower.

A planning statement prepared by John Cooper at Deloitte Real Estate said: "The proposals will create a significant improvement in the quality of the townscape of the area, bring a listed building back into viable, public use, and deliver a building of architectural quality deserving of the prominence of the site and complementary to the collection of heritage assets in the immediate area."

Adagio in talks over Manchester aparthotel

19th June 2013

By James Graham - Deputy Editor, North West

HOTEL operator Accor has narrowed down its search for a new location in Manchester to two potential sites.

Last week the group formally launched its Adagio aparthotel in Liverpool's converted Lewis' building. The refurbished Grade II-listed department store is part of the £160m Central Village regeneration scheme.

Vangelis Porikis, Adagio director for central and Northern Europe, told TheBusinesDesk: "We're in discussions at two possible sites in the centre of Manchester - but it's only the start of discussions."

The group would not disclose the locations it is interested in, but it hopes to open in the city next year. It will not buy a building, but instead take a lease as it has done in Liverpool with the Central Village landlord, Regent Capital.

The 126-apartment Adagio Liverpool has a mix of studios and one-bedroom apartments aimed at business and tourism visitors who will stay up to 90 days. As well as Manchester, the group is also planning to launch in Birmingham, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Mr Porikis added: “The UK was always been in the strategic plans for Adagio. We looked at the major cities that are attracting overseas customers that want extended stays and we found there is a lot of interest in Liverpool. We always look for cities where there's a mix of corporate and leisure business coming from international locations."

The Adagio aparthotels business is a joint venture between Pierre & Vacances Center Parcs Group and Accor. The Liverpool hotel has been operating since the end of March.
