On the subject of JR East, I mentioned it in the rail thread but forgot to follow up on this.

Earlier this year I was brought in as a consultant for a JR East branch to help them with tourism related planning. I was able to take some snapshots of their office, including this interesting train "simulator"

Some of the suggestions and comments I received from you guys were passed a long so I appreciate everyone's contribution

Nice! Sendai Operations Center eh? They are really aggressive in getting people up that way, for sure!

I hope some of those suggestions filter up the line to Shinjuku HQ...

New Keio 5000 Series

Keio Corporation received its first 5000 series 10-cars set. This is the Wabakadaien depot on the Keio Sagamihara Line.

A total of 5 trains will be ready entry into service in the Tokyo area from September 2017 as a regular trains, and serving the new "limited express" services by spring 2018.

My first (and probably last) station upgrade update.

In April I was back "home" in Kyoto, and decided to revisit my old neighbourhood station as I knew it had been expanded.

Hankyu Saiin Station

Historically very poorly designed, the station only had one entrance and exit until recently, which created terrible draft/wind conditions when trains would come and go (both platforms are underground). And despite acting as a local transport hub, as it intersects with Keifuku Saiin station (the "Randen"), the stations were previously unconnected, and signage was poor.

Hankyu Saiin and Keifuku Saiin have now undergone signifcant works, in which two new entrance/exits were added to Hankyu Saiin, both stations were finally joined together, and one of the Keifuku Saiin platforms was also relocated.

New Southern Entrance

New Northern Entrance

New Northern Entrance and Keifuku Randen platform (entirely new, including the black apartment block above it
- this is how it used to be)

Inside the new entrance - unfortunately I didn't get shots of both new gates. These ones lead to the Eastbound platform (for Kyoto Kawaramachi).

Bit of info about the works

A few bonus shots:

Saiin Station platform, Semi-Express bound for Umeda

Limited Express bound for Kyoto Kawaramachi (at Osaka Umeda)

Let's hope we can see some more station upgrades being posted again in this thread

Yes, well, the Big Two (as I think of them), Awaji and Takadanobaba, are moving along slowly. But nobody seems to have any pictures. Could somebody help post pictures or links from other sites here?

thanks! I might be coming down your side in the near future if my proposal for Kanagawa goes through.
If it does, I might be recruiting local area non-Japanese to participate with JR training if you are interested

Takadanobaba? What's going on there? I use all three parts of that station (JR, Seibu and Tokyo Metro) from time to time and there's nothing major going on that I can see right now....well other than the Beck's coffee shop space in the front being gone for a year and them finally being finished with the structural improvements to the bridge that had the TVM area walled off and very constricted. Thank goodness that's done, but it looks the same to me.

As for Awaji; stay tuned. I have some plans to hit Osaka in August, and I'll be going through that station on the Hankyu line a few times.

Some other observations:

Basically this is a J-TREC version of Seibu's Hitachi-built S-Train 40000 series except:
  • There's no on-board toilet
  • AC power outlets only work during "liner" operation and the seats are in traverse configuration
  • There's batteries on-board so in case there's a blackout, the train can limp to a station and off load passengers without being stuck
  • Faux woodgrain flooring.

BTW, the body looks like that image of the upcoming Tokyu 2020 series for the Den-en-Toshi line as well....

It looks mostly finished by my untrained eye, but they need to get rid of the roofing on the old pylons as well.

Great, thanks Starrwulfe! Would be cool to see a picture or two of the finished product; hopefully the usual blogs will have something to show us in the coming months.

I meant Takenotsuka.

Ah, the joys of being hyped up on antihistamines.
