(FOOTBALL) Sheffield, England, UK - Hillsborough Stadium (39,814)

I love this stadium. It's very big and has a great sense of traditions and the right values in football. Sadly I couldn't find many pictures of this great stadium but if anyone wants to add then I'll have no problems with that

Would be nice for a little investment. I think the facilities (toilets etc.) are due to be upgraded, but i've got a little itinery of what needs doing.

- The west stand an the kop both need new cantilever roofs too get rid of those poles.
- The corners need filling in and roofed (to match the west stand & kop)
- The facilities for supporters need completely revamping (not to sure what's involved in the proposed ones).

I think with the above done, it would be a brilliant stadium, with history too.

Only been to Hillsborough once, but thought it was a good ground with atmosphere.

It does strike me as ironic however, that the Leppings Lane end is virtually unchanged since 1989. Apart from seats bolted onto the terraces.

I think it's beautiful, best looking big stadium in Britain now Highbury has gone and Villa Park's been ruined.

I don't know about filling the corners in, in fact I'd remove that open corner. I'd also like to remove the roof and seats from the kop. I've seen pictures pre roof and it looked so epic.

Here it is with the roof, but pre-all seating. I think it was the largest covered kop in Europe.

This stand is stunning, needs a lick of paint, but it looks the dog's knackers to this day

I'm sorry, but that's one of the ugliest things I've seen. The grey bay end with the curve in it, the acute angle of the roof to the stand, the way the stand is concrete propped up by steel, and the way the steelwork appears to curve, all add up to severe hideousness in my book... Blech!

Now this is a proper stadium. Old skool english is a rarity these days. Especially when it still holds 40k. I love it and wish there were more examples of such mind blowing character and traditionalism. This stadium sticks two fingers up to the premier league and all the swanky generic bollocks we have been made to suffer as a result of what happened at this venue 18years ago.
The irony is not lost on me(JonH).

What would you rather have? A plastic bowl that looks the same as all the other plastic bowls? No ta.

Hillsborough for the win.

Hillsborough is my church and Wednesday is my religion.

I agree with Paulmat regarding all of his ideas for Hillsborough bar one, I would actually like to see the away end torn down thus stripping this stand of the fateful events of 1989 which I was so close to being caught up inas a then Liverpool fan and replaced with something similar to either end stand at Chelsea,

I think I could agree with you on that rotherowl. The West stand is crap, and the whole of the west end could do with being replaced with a larger new stand, and roofed corners. Only there's not very much space to build on.

You may not like the North Stand Charlie P, but it was the first full length cantilever stand in the UK.

Yeh. I'd agree with that, The away end has looked rubbish for years. I think when the lights are on it says Sh ff ild Wedne day or soemthing like that, but you get the idea.

Knowing some people though they'd accuse of being disrespectful to those who died if we did that.

During the floods on Monday, Hillsborough got badly hit, as can be seen below (this is after the water has subsided a bit).

They're currently pumping the water out, but having problems as there's ongoing powercuts. Once the water has been cleared, they're gonna have the pitch assessed, but it's quite likely that it will need completely replacing, and also possible the under-pitch heating is badly damaged. There's also a very real possibility that the ground may not be sorted for the start of the new season. It's not only the pitch that was affected. Pretty much everything on the ground floor got flooded (e.g the changing rooms). All in all, it's very bad news.

hah. That used to happen to Gay Meadow in Shrewsbury every year. It was always funny seeing the team's mascot in a dingy floating around the centre circle.

This is also my Church where i go to preach for the White and Blue Owls.

I love the stadium, and glad we are still keeping a sense of tradition. I would like to see some money spent modernising some of the ground (west stand), painting the North and better facilities in the Kop. But as most people know, money is tight in S6 so not likely to happen anytime soon.

It's nice to see some other wednesdayites on here

Hi there Metroguy.

Yeah, it would be nice for it to be modernised a bit. Just as long as they don't go and knock it all down. As you've said though, money is a bit tight.

I take it the pitch has a hill with half of it being dry!!

The stadium is alright. Not as nuce when compared to some older stadium, in my opinion, but it's always good to see an anti-bowl.

I don't care how 'traditional this stadium is or how much 'character' it has, the supporters facilities are wank, end of.The stairs from the car park into the stadium are particularly scary. Surely other stadiums have managed to do traditional without just 'not doing anything' to a dated stadium?

Hillsborough is an awesome stadium and with the half the money it's taken to build the Walkers, Rioch, St Marys etc it could once again become one of the country's best.

yeah Nick, it would need some work to bring it up to date, clear up some of the facilities but you can't buy tradition and Hillsborough is filled with it, and can have an awesome atmosphere.

P.S. Nick you're not Nick King are you by any chance?
