Really this site is a little small for the space they are wanting.. It would be much nicer if they reduced the size of the exhibition hall and instead created more retail around the edges of the block (facing the street).. and made the edges of the building a bit taller.
I have been to a number of conference's in Shenzhen Shanghai recently
The footprint is relatively similar to Aucklands
1 large area for exhibitions and booths for customer discussions including engagement area
Then break out rooms and auditorium for key note speakers

I think Skycity have done there homework here

That is a really impressive website!

I went on a tour of the construction site when it was first started and looked at the design model. I was a little concerned about the pedestrian-level experience along Hobson, Nelson & Wellesley Streets given Council had some thoughts about creating a boulevard on Hobson St and improved ped/cycle links between Vic Park Qtr and Aotea Qtr.
The Architect told me the internal space requirements we difficult to work with (levels and open spans etc) , therefore no leftover bits for shops etc on the edges. (Also the heritage facade (conveniently) being retained. )

For all the fancy renders of the building & interiors, I've seen few that show the pedestrian level from Hobson, Nelson & Wellesley Streets.

at best, at worst that will be dominated by high speed car entrances to their garages like on the other side of the street.

Even the Las Vegas strip has bars, cafes and shops on the street frontage of the casinos

Just jump on streetview.. there are many food & beverage outlets, walgreens, the Linq, etc. All the casinos north of Tropicana Ave make an extraordinary effort to create great street appeal and they all have shops and other things besides just gaming & hospo.

Skycity has a poor layout internally so everyone must use one entrance (skytower). A multi-entrance, open plan internal configuration with underground servicing would be far superior. There's a lot of scope to improve it but I think skycity are under the impression that all their customers either stay in the hotel or arrive by car. If they want conference guests, cruise ship passengers, etc to enjoy their visit, they should think about upgrading that part of town 'cos right now it's a crappy overall experience.
