Salem-Namakkal-Karur passenger train services

COIMBATORE, MAY 22:
Passenger train services in the Salem-Namakkal-Karur BG line are expected to commence from Monday (May 27) on a regular basis.

The first train, according to a Southern Railway release is to be flagged off from Salem Railway Junction on May 25 at 10.35 a.m. Thereafter it is expected to be made regular (commencing from the week starting May 27).

Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, develops simple apparatus that generates energy from cow's urine


NAMAKKAL: With the entire state reeling under a severe power crisis, especially the rural areas, the department of livestock production and management at the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Namakkal has come up with a simple electricity generating apparatus whereby farmers will be able to generate energy from cow's urine.

Talking to TOI, head of the department Dr V Ramesh Saravana Kumar said the apparatus is based on a simple scientific principle and will be able to generate 10 volts of electricity continuously for 120 hours (five days) from two litres of cow urine. "All we need is 10 to 12 plastic cups, each filled with 200ml of urine, thin copper plates as the positive poles and a thin zinc plates as negative poles. One needs to spend just Rs80 to setup the apparatus," he said.
Describing the apparatus Ramesh said the positive and negative poles in the cups are connected by single core wires or hook-up wires that form two separate networks. The two output wires can be connected to any desired device. "When copper and zinc plates come in contact with uric acid movement of electrons begin, generating electricity. The output dips after five days, when the urine has to replaced," he added.

With the help of the model, college students demonstrated that five wall clocks and a zero watts bulb can be operated simultaneously. "While electricity can also be generated from urine of other cattle, cow's urine is used as it is abundantly available. A cow can produces 16 to 20 litres of urine every day. Proper collection of urine from cows can help farmers generate more electricity," Ramesh said.

Ramesh said the pungent urine smell can be avoided by keeping the apparatus outdoors and using a long wire to connect it to the output device. He said the apparatus was a boon for children residing in rural areas as connecting it with an LED bulb, like the ones used in powerful torches and positioning them properly can provide hours of light for study.

A bigger model can be used to light up an entire house, including the cow shed. Farmers, who have already seen the model, have appealed to technical institutions to generate bigger and more efficient models with provisions to store electricity.

People throng railway stations.

NAMAKKAL, May 26, 2013

From the Rasipuram Railway Station (the first of the six railway stations in Namakkal district) to the Mohanur Railway Station (the last one) people of all age groups gathered in strength to accord a welcome to the first passenger train service.

More than 5,000 people – including party activists – thronged the Rasipuram Railway Station and lit fireworks that rocked the platform.

Drum beats of local band parties kept the spirits of the people high as they eagerly waited for the train and threw flowers on it when it arrived.

People distributed sweets and water packets.

S. Gandhiselvan, MP, said that efforts would be taken to extend (or divert) major train services to metros and important cities through Namakkal station.

Pamphlets were distributed to passersby and onlookers thanking the officials of the Southern Railway and Salem Division for the efforts taken by them in brining the train to Namakkal.

Thousands of villagers living on sides of the railway track watched in enthusiasm as a passenger train was passing through the locality for the first time.

The Chennai Central–Madurai-Chennai Central Duronto bi-weekly express trains will run on the diverted route, via the newly-opened Salem-Namakkal- Karur section.

The change will be with effect from Monday from Chennai Central and from Tuesday from Madurai.

Train No. 22205 Chennai Central- Madurai service will leave Chennai Central at 10.30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and reach Madurai at 7 a.m. the following day. Train No. 22606 Madurai–Chennai Central express will leave Madurai at 10.40 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and reach Chennai Central at 7.10 a.m. the following day.



The change will be with effect from Monday from Chennai Central

The mountain seen from 45th Hairpin bend of Kolli Hills is Nainamalai, not Mettala. From this view point we cannot visualize Rasipuram. This is only Sendamangalam, Kalappanaickanpatti and Namakkal and its suburbs. Rasipuram is visualized from other view point , not from this angle.

‘Super schools’ in Namakkal gear up for admission to Plus One.

As students of Class X board exams are awaiting results, parents are trying their best to get admission for their wards in ‘super schools’ here for higher secondary classes.

‘Super schools’ here are working out enrolment mechanisms to identify ‘super students’ among the applicants.

Last year, a few super schools had to seek the support of the police to manage the crowd on the school premises.and for helping parents from various districts to park their cars outside the school.

The demand for higher secondary courses in super schools is on the increase. Managements of super schools here have no doubt that there will be tremendous demand for the Plus One this year after schools here proved their dominance in the Plus Two board exams.

“In a bid to avoid the hassles faced by the parents and students on the day of publication of the Class X board examination results our school will follow the State government’s counselling mode. Unlike previous years, admissions will not be done on the day when the result is published,” S.P.N. Saravanan, Correspondent of Greenpark School, told The Hindu .

He said that more than 2,000 students applied for Plus One last year.

“More than five persons – parents, relatives and big shots accompany the student – thronged the school to admit each student.

“This year, application forms will be distributed on the day of announcement of results and filled in applications will be received only on that day,” he said.

“The applications will be scrutinised and will be published on the school’s website the same night.

On a par with the counselling for professional courses, the students who fall into the particular mark category alone can come to the school on the specified date and get admitted,” Mr. Saravanan added.

A few other school managements said that they too would be following this model to admit candidates.

Some super schools have shocked parents approaching them for admission, stating that they need not come if their children score less than 450 (90 per cent) in the SSLC board exams.

Parents thronged the state rank-producing ‘Super Schools’ for a berth in Plus One here on Friday.

Increasing demand for the schools here — created by parents and students — has led to a situation where it is not enough if they score more than 96 per cent (eligibility for a free seat in previous years) or if they were ready to pay huge fees.

One ‘Super School’ in Namakkal announced they were conducting admissions only for those who scored more than 490 (98 per cent).

“This school offered free education and hostel accommodation for those who scored more than 496 (99.2 per cent). Free tuition fees is offered to those who scored 494 or 495 marks while others have to pay Rs. 2 lakh per year. No other discounts or concessions below that score,” parents of R. Siva of Karaikudi who scored 486 (97.2 per cent) marks, said.

“Spending Rs. 4 lakh for two years — including Rs. one lakh each for tuition and hostel fees for each year — is more than the management quota fees that we have to pay for our son to study engineering in a good college”, R. Ragu a parent from Kumbakonam said. Due to these reasons, not all parents of students who scored more than 490 were happy though the school was ready to admit their wards.

For R. Kumar who scored 489 marks (97.8 per cent) and his parents the joy of scoring high lasted only for a brief while as the school where they were waiting for hours before the results were announced revised the eligibility norms for fees concessions from 485 to 495 minutes after the announcement of results.

“We are not here for a free seat. But fleecing us with Rs. 1.5 lakh per annum even after scoring so high is disappointing,” M. Leena of Tirunelveli lamented.

The management of a ‘Super School’ said they had raised the admission cut-off mark to 490 on the first day after they came to know that hundreds of students across the state scored more than 490.

“Despite the high fees quoted by us, we were able to enrolled more than 250 students with the score till afternoon.

Students who scored lesser should come for admissions on the date specified for them on our school website,” he added.

Parents from various districts waited in long queues from as early as 2 a.m. with the hope of getting a berth for their wards in the ‘Super Schools’, which could help their children score a cut-off and join professional education after two years. Some schools made admissions easier by helping them take printouts of the marksheets and earmarking admission points based on the marks scored by the students — above 490 and 480 to 489. Some ‘Super Schools’ arranged food (breakfast, lunch and tea) at a nominal price for the parents and students.

However, the admission process of ‘Super Schools’ and the ‘attitude’ of the school managements surprised a few and shocked many parents who had made a beeline to these institutions.

கால்பந்து விளையாட்டுக்கு, 16 மாணவியர் தற்போது விடுதியில் உள்ளனர். கபாடி போட்டிக்கு தேர்வு நடத்தப்பட்டு, அதில் தேர்வு செய்யப்படும் மாணவியர் விடுதியில் சேர்க்கப்படுவர்.
விடுதியில் சேர்க்கப்பட்ட மாணவியருக்கு காலை, மாலை பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்படும். உணவு, விடுதி இலவசமாக அளிக்கப்படுகிறது.
விளையாட்டு விடுதி கட்டப்பட்டவுடன், தனியார் கல்வி நிறுவன வளாகத்தில் செயல்படும் விடுதி மாற்றம் செய்யப்படும், என்றனர்.
