But anyway, aren't we still paying for the bonds to finance the construction?
Good point. But I don't know if 'we' are paying, meaning us taxpayers, or if the debt service was to be paid from convention revenue. Are they revenue bonds or general obligation, where the full taxing power of the city is behind the payments?

I believe the city paid off the debts back in 2015. But even so, I wouldn’t want to have a new convention center that the city would have to pay back for just after paying off our current one. I think it’s also fair to analysis if conventions will still be a large event in the next decade. With technology advances, changes in demographic interests, etc., will large conventions like ComicCon and boat shows still be an interest 10 years from now? Something to think about.

The money that was used to pay for the convention center are actually being used to pay for infrastructure improvements for the whole Water Street project.

Quick answer is yes. People who know each other online or long distance love a good excuse to meet in person and talk about their interests among others who are of that interest.

Agreed, in my experience such conventions have only increased in traffic. They do not have as big trade show/sales sections as before as the internet replaces a lot of that need, but screenings, meet and greets, etc. just keep getting bigger and more popular.

I'm already cringing. Half expect the accident rate with TECO Line to be sky-high if there aren't barriers that block the valet drive as streetcars pass.

If true, Tampa Bay will be getting 2 JW Marriotts since one is planned on clearwater beach.

JW it is.

The 26-story convention hotel in Water Street Tampa will be a JW Marriott, a luxury flag that is not yet in Tampa.

Strategic Property Partners, the developer of Water Street Tampa, announced the flag for 10 Water Street, which will include 519 rooms and the region's highest rooftop bar. SPP also announced $40 million in renovations to the adjacent Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina.

So is that considered 4 star hotel? Just curious.
Because we are supposed to get a 5 star as well.
