One of my frustration from personal experience were how early the last service back to Melbourne was (approx 9pm or so on the weekends). When I went to a beer festival in Ballarat, you ended up having a mad rush to finish up your beers/dinner and get to the station in time to go home.
That helps the local tourism industry though.
If the train service back to Melbourne is shit, more people will book accommodation in Ballarat for the beer festival.

I agree. Even though it may be frustrating on some occasions, sometimes there's a broader good to these decisions

Those towns need more visitors to stay longer than they currently do. A lot do day trips but it doesn't add as much to the local economy.

Or may simply choose not to go in the first place, it unfortunately goes both ways.

Just to clarify, I am not against these express services but I am unsure which one (express or more frequent services) should get the first slice of the funding pie at this stage.

I have often wondered what type of tourism packages are available through Vline that allows people to seamlessly connect from a regional train service to the tourism operators of those cities where the tour fee includes the cost of a regional rail ticket, physical tourism operator presence at the stations, and flexi time allowing people to stay back in the city until they want to travel home (as an example).

Daytrip visitors to country towns aren't normally fussed over saving 10 minutes. Melb to Ballarat and Bendigo are both pretty quick runs anyway.

BTW there's a 10:20pm train on weeknights from Ballarat to Melb now in the current timetable. Usually only carries about 5 people.

Just counted 28 different stopping patterns in the new Geelong line timetable! And that's just for the outbound direction, there's more inbound only ones.

Not like they're trying to confuse or anything....

Waurn Ponds services = 8 stopping patterns

SCS, FSY, Sunshine, exp to Deer Park, Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, exp to Lara, exp to North Shore, all stns to Waurn Ponds
SCS, FSY, Sunshine, exp to Little River, Lara, exp to North Geelong, all stns to Waurn Ponds

Warrnambool services = 7 stopping patterns

SCS, FSY, exp to Geelong, exp to Waurn Ponds, all stns to Warrnambool
SCS, FSY, exp to Lara, all stns to Geelong, exp to Waurn Ponds, all stns to Warrnambool

Geelong services = 4 stopping patterns
SCS, FSY, Sunshine, exp to Deer Park, Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, exp to Lara, exp to North Shore, North Geelong, Geelong

Marshall services = 1 stopping pattern
SCS, FSY, exp to Tarneit, all stns to Lara, exp to North Geelong, all stns to Marshall

.... And meanwhile for another interurban railway in Australia (Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast), I also did a count of stopping patterns, and in fairness I also counted the patterns of suburban services using the same line.

Domestic, all stns to Park Road, Altandi, Loganlea, Beenleigh, all stns to Varsity Lakes
Bowen Hills, all stns to Park Road, Altandi, Loganlea, Beenleigh, all stns to Varsity Lakes

There are a handful of services that terminate at Doomben in the AM peak and start there in the PM peak, but otherwise pretty homogeneous. It's about the only real advantage of our network (assuming the October 2016 timetable had actually managed to last more than 2 weeks before imploding).

V/Line is an odd duck. Just why are there so many variations? Is it crowd management for particular runs, needing to deal with highly variable consist lengths, track and stabling limitations, just they couldn't be arsed simplifying it?
