Great VanHool buses are showing here!

And I love those fine and well maintained vintage streetcars in SF!

Good to see you back again, Benonie! Indeed, those VanHool buses are still hard at work, and we've managed to convert some of them into Hydrogen Fuel Cell buses that use water to power those buses. See the interiors and exteriors of those on the previous pages, and I wonder if Belgium will also adopt such technology as well... I mean, that would be a great alternative to diesel buses to start with. Plus, using an abundant resource as hydrogen to power the bus not only saves the environment, but also less noise and fuel consumption.

For today, let me do a little flashback as I've uncovered some mass transit images I've taken as far back as 2011... from my Flickr collection.

Part 1: Temporary Transbay Terminal.

Yep, The flemish transport compagny ordered hybrid buses and new and longer streetcars recently.

And there are current tram line extensions all over the country. In Antwerp, Charleroi, Brussels and the region north of Brussels.

In between cities light rail should replace the old and slow local trains in the future, but that projects haven't even started....

So there's a switch from diesel buses to enviromental friendlier trams and hybrid buses, but like most things in Belgium, things change way too slow...

Ah yes... articulated streetcars. Are those the low-floored variant or high-floored? Plus, do the trams operate as a PreMetro service or a full-blown Metro (subway)? And yes, it takes time to replace public transit vehicles, especially from trains to trams... I've discovered lately that train-trams do exist, and I'm starting to like that concept as well! For me, I believe in system interconnections: similar to what's being done in Japan, commuter trains operated by other companies interoperate on both the traditional railway and underground Metro services, allowing passengers to enjoy one-ride services between the city and suburbs (or even suburb-to-suburb) without switching to any train type at all. To me, efficiency, speed, frequency, and design all play key roles in providing a superior public transportation network, and I truly believe that it will complement, not compete, with the highways, cars, and trucks.

Trams in Belgium are low floored trams, at least the new ones. In the Brussels region they have the Bombardier T3000 and T4000 models (and many older models ass well). In Brussels there is a full blown metro, but also an underground premetro tram network and an street level tramnetwork.

Here is a nice video showing Brussles Tramways: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w8SCvqEJNA (but also has some metro trains in it)
and here it's metro with both old and new trains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV7i9Pxv3BE At the end of this vid starting around 2:14, you can see a joint underground station and platform between metro and premetro.

In Antwerp there is a premetro tram network and a street level tram network (very simalar to the one in the video about Brussels tramway) aswell. Ghent has a street level tramnetwork and all coastal towns are connected by the worlds longest single line tram called "Kusttram" The new low floor trams are the "Herlemijn" model also made by Bombardier. Antwerp has now ordered Flexity 2 from Bombardier.
