Well played Fukco.

PS. In my defence I had been enthusiastically 'networking' at Rydges bar in NZ (as it happens) until 2am that morning.

yes sydney very dense. much more then say melb which is spread out more.
sydney has more 150m+ skyscrapers crammed in to just 1km x 3km.
so have to be over 200m now to impact on skyline. these bldgs are coming and they 5 or6 will be 250m+ which will wonders to the skyline by 2021

Southbank Melbourne now would have to be the most dense in Australia
Another 5 years it will be double the size and with the countries 3 tallest towers
A mate from Sydney made this comment " I can't believe this area in the 90's it was a baron nothing there now it looks bigger than most of the other cities in Australia"
And the cluster of the CBD north it's already looking dense and jammed in wait for the twins and aurora to top out.

Melbourne SA2 (basically the CBD) is the densest part of Australia, by a long shot. Southbank's density is difficuly to accurately estimate as the SA2 includes the Botanic Gardens.

I expect that in the future, as Southbank's population continues to increase (and once it passes 30,000 people) the SA2 will be subdivided into smaller areas so an "apples with apples" comparison will be easier to understand.

I love me a list, let's see about the 5 or 6 250m+ buildings:

- Crown Tower
- Circular Quay tower (Lend Lease)
- 505 George St
- 338 Pitt Street (RL 258m)
- Mooted project 1 (supertall?)
- Mooted 2

I'll be interested in the mooted ones; I think we were promised news coming up soon.

Yes I remember reading somewhere that Southbank is around 40% public space. Cannot remember exactly. They included roads in the figure too. If you look at an aerial of Southbank you can see that a lot of room is taken up by numerous wide roads.

I've also read posts by a few people saying that to have a really dense city you need a sea of 4 storey buildings. These people use Melbourne's CBD as an example of talls not making a city dense. What they don't realise that they are not comparing apples with apples. Dense cities in Europe made up of 4 storey buildings have narrow streets. Also, Melbourne is not finished.

Will try and find the article.

many developers are awaiting the new draft masterplan of lifted height restriction, so hoping in next decade we will see 300m+ projects
