SFMOMA: Museum of Modern Art Addition | San Francisco

The link has some good images. The design of the museum looks interesting.

Design unveiled for SFMOMA addition

John King, Chronicle Urban Design Critic
Wednesday, May 25, 2011

(05-25) 16:38 PDT San Francisco -- The details are sketchy, but the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has released its design concept for a new wing that would double the size of the institution - a concept that aims to slide a block-long building into the landscape without causing a fuss.

The expansion would stretch from Howard Street north to Minna Street behind the museum's existing home, a length of 335 feet. The top height of 195 feet along Howard compares with the 163-foot peak of SFMOMA's distinctive granite-rimmed skylight.

But instead of a solid block, the architects envision something more like a weathered cliff that folds in on all sides to lessen the impact on views and not shade the museum's popular sculpture garden...

That looks great! I have a German friend who was an intern at SFMOMA and told me about the new wing. Also, I haven't visited that place in a very long time.

It's nice to see them do something creative with the roof.

With 79 percent of the capital campaign goal raised two years ahead of the groundbreaking for the expansion of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the museum's Board of Trustees has approved visitor- and city-friendly enhancements to the original design program and, in turn, has raised the capital campaign goal to $555 million from $480 million, an increase of 15 percent. These additional funds will enable the museum to increase the number and types of spaces dedicated to education, public engagement, exhibitions, collections, and programs. Expanding strategically on the conceptual design announcement made in May 2011, SFMOMA today unveiled new design details including ground-level galleries and orientation spaces that will be free to the public and new educational spaces throughout the museum. The design also features new pedestrian pathways that lead to and through the museum from the surrounding streets, creating a nexus for the neighborhood. The expansion is designed by architectural firm Snøhetta in collaboration with SFMOMA; groundbreaking is scheduled for summer 2013, and completion is projected in early 2016.

SFMOMA to close for 2-plus years, lay off staff
Date: Friday, June 29, 2012, 3:00am PDT
Hannah Albarazi

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will be closing for more than two years when it will take to the streets with its permanent collection.

SFMOMA will create exhibits at various off-site locations while the museum closes to undergo an extensive expansion starting in 2013.

The plan still has many details that need to be worked out and it will involve some layoffs and require additional fundraising to cover the lost revenue from ticket fees.

The museum — which is in the midst of a $555 million capital campaign for construction and an increased museum endowment — decided not to relocate to a designated space temporarily as the California Academy of Sciences did several years ago when it built a new home.

SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra said that while the museum is closed for 2½ years, some staff will remain at the offices at the Museum’s annex on Minna Street and others will move to rented office space in the financial district. SFMOMA has 254 full and part-time staff members and while museum administrators do anticipate some layoffs, they are working on a staffing plan that will minimize the number of jobs that are impacted . . . .

Not to be missed:

"It will be in fact the largest gallery spaces available of any museum in the country for modern art." That's just one of the many factoids you'll learn by watching the above video, which dives deep into the SFMOMA expansion, expected to be completed by 2016 . . . .

And it'll probably cut the price of a lot of east-facing rooms in the W Hotel too . . . .

Hi CE, how have you been? I missed the news that SFMOMA was going to close down during the construction of the new wing. Have you heard a more specific date on when that might happen? We took the family a couple of months ago and I want plan ahead if we should make another visit before it closes. Hope you're well and enjoying your garden in Tuscon.
