Sharm El-Sheikh adds TB3

Quote:
IT IS Sharm El-Sheikh airport again. Only two years after it opened its second terminal building, the airport authority decided to take a step forward to expand its capacity by doubling it. Last Thursday, the Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (HCAAN) came to sign a contract with Spanish construction designers Pointec for a third terminal at the Red Sea resort.

According to Ibrahim Manaa, chairman of the HCAAN, the new terminal takes the total capacity of the airport from 7.5 million to 15 million passengers per annum.

"The project's primary costs are estimated at $350 million," stated Manaa in a signing ceremony in Cairo attended by Spain's Ambassador to Egypt Antonio Lopez. "The design phase is due to be completed within a year. International contractors then will be invited for an open tender to construct the terminal. It is scheduled to be completely constructed by 2012," he explained.

The project includes constructing a new terminal building for passengers, a new runway, and a new tarmac for aircrafts.

In May 2007, Sharm El-Sheikh airport celebrated operating its state-of-the-art terminal with a unique design that mixes Bedouin heritage with marine life characters. The terminal took airport capacity from 3 million to 7.5 millon passengers per annum.

"By the end of 2008, figures of traffic within airport hit a record of 7 million passengers which rang a warning alarm for us that we are about to face an overcapacity problem soon. Thus we launched the second stage of the expansion project," Manaa indicated.

He added that forecasts indicated that passenger movement within Sharm El-Sheikh airports would hit 12 million passengers within the next few years.

Great news!! First Cairo's new terminal, then Alexandrias new airport, then this!! After this project is completed it will officialy make all our major airports (CAIRO, ALEX, SHARM) world-calss and state of the art. Well done to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, one of the best Ministries in the Egyptian Government

EgyptAir swaps two 777s for eight 737-800s

Quote:
EgyptAir and Boeing said yesterday that the airline converted a previous order for two 777s into an order for an additional eight 737-800s.

The order previously had been added to Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website and attributed to an unidentified customer (ATWOnline, July 17). The carrier has seven 737-800s in operation and is slated to take delivery of an additional five this year. It has five 777s in its fleet and is scheduled to receive six 777-300ERs beginning next year.

It has said its growth strategy is based on expanding services in Africa and allowing passengers to connect to long-haul routes available via its membership in Star Alliance (ATWOnline, June 16). "We are pursuing a fleet plan that allows us to expand our regional markets and offer those passengers extensive international routing options," Chairman Tawfik Assy said. EgyptAir joined Star Alliance in July 2008.
here are photos of one of 7 Boeing 737-800s currently in the EgyptAir fleet:

Wow! A new terminal that doubles the airport capacity! It's going to be a big terminal... I hope with jetbridges it's better for the service instead of busses. Can't Wait for the new terminal renders. (I think Hurghada Airport will be the next one for a new terminal?)

Air Arabia, Travco to launch budget airline in Egypt

Quote:
CAIRO: Air Arabia, a low-cost carrier based in the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt’s Travco Group entered into a joint venture to launch a new budget airline.

The Egyptian carrier will be Air Arabia’s third hub — after the UAE and Morocco — serving Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the airline said in a statement.

Operations of the low-cost carrier will be managed by the Air Arabia Group.

The Arab world's largest listed airline by market value already flies to 57 destinations.

Air Arabia, said in August it planned to set up a new hub between its base at Sharjah, United Arab Emirates and North Africa to diversify its revenues and boost its catchment area, Reuters reported.

Egyptian tourist company Travco recently acquired Germany's Steigenberger Hotels as part of efforts to expand its international operations.

The company operates 146 hotels, resorts and cruises in Europe, Egypt and the Middle East, including the management of 81 Steigenberger and InterCity hotels.

Generating over €1 billion in revenues, Travco has two real estate developments on Egypt’s North Coast and the Red Sea.

Air Arabia, which first launched in 2003, operates a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 aircraft and recently ordered 44 more.

The airline is facing growing competition from local rivals including Kuwait's Jazeera Airways and Dubai-owned flydubai, as well as from fully-fledged carriers such as Emirates, struggling to cope with a sharp drop in international passenger travel, Reuters reported. –Daily News Egypt

Egyptian budget airline expects end-of-year launch

Quote:
A new budget airline formed by Egyptian Travco Group and the United Arab Emirates' Air Arabia hopes to begin operating by the end of 2009 from as many as five Egyptian airports, the head of Travco said.

The airline, Air Arabia Egypt, will seek Egyptian government permission to use airports at Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh to fly to European, Middle Eastern and north African destinations.

"We intend to submit our plan in the next weeks, and depending on the approvals we get we will decide on the operation and conditions of operation," chairman and chief executive Hamed El Chiaty told Reuters in an interview.

Travco, Egypt's biggest tourism company, owns 50 percent of the airline, Air Arabia 40 percent and an independent Egyptian investor 10 percent, Chiaty said.

Its initial capital is $20 million, increasing to $50 million over the next three years. The airline will lease aircraft from Air Arabia or other sources, Chiaty said.

"We have entrusted the day-to-day running of the airline to Air Arabia," said Chiaty. "We have a joint board, and we take the main decisions in the board, but they are in charge of the day-to-day running maintenance, engineering, catering and handling."

For its part, Travco will provide the airline with access to its network of tour operators and help in marketing. "We're going to help them with governmental relations and all that is related to dealings with the Egyptian government," Chiaty said. –Reuters

Al masria Universal has started operations:

Quote:
AlMasria Universal Airlines is an airline based in Egypt. Plans for the airline were announced in the 2008 and launched operations during June 2009. The airline is currently operating charter services from Egypt to Europe however is planning to become Egypt's second flag-carrier offering scheduled services to around 20 destinations in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. The airline will become the only private Egyptian scheduled operator when it launches scheduled services in late 2009.

AlMasria is derived from the Arabic word for Egypt.
Fleet

Quote:
The airline's fleet will centre around the Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline currently has two A320s in operation. The first aircraft arrived in Egypt on Tuesday April 2009 and second in August 2009. Both aircraft are leased from BOC Aviation

The airline's CEO stated the plans call for a further 3 A320 will join during the first year of operation. An eventual fleet of 10 aircraft is planned by 2014. "We aim to dry-lease the first aircraft for the first three years," says Aziz. "After five years we aim to buy aircraft from Airbus by 2014. We don't want to load the balance sheet by buying $250 million in assets at the start."

AlMasria will configure the aircraft with 180 all-economy seat, but is keen to stress that it is not a low-cost airline and will provide a full on-board service. Cairo-originating services will feature two cabins with aircraft configured with 165 seats
Destinations

Quote:
The airline currently (Summer 2009) is operating scheduled flights on the following routes:

Alexandria (Alexandria International Airport) - Kuwait (Kuwait International Airport)
Assiut (Assiut Airport) - Kuwait (Kuwait International Airport)
Luxor (Luxor International Airport) - Kuwait (Kuwait International Airport)

Other destinations earmarked by Aziz include Europe and Middle East with specific mention of Libya, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan] in addition to Copenhagen and Milan. AlMasria is also looking to lever the current bilateral talks taking place between Cairo and Baghdad.
