Thanks for the link to that other thread on Cairo airports. Now we just need to find someone who works at the airport that can take lots of cool photos of the daily plane traffic!

Hey,

I just saw this video on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMhyU-VwK5A

Actually it's a nice video about the A330 family but at 1 min 20 secs through the video it features the new cabin interior onboard Egyptair's A330-300's (and the 777W). It's a really nice cabin (and such a shame all except one of these new A330-300s is sitting on the tarmac at Cairo doing zilch!)

Yes, I live in Cairo and I pass through the airport quite often (in fact I'll be there this evening ) but it's hard to take photos. There arent many places to take any decent photos from the terminals - least nothing as good as the photos on that Khartoum Airport thread. We need an "insider"!!

Since the beginning of the revolution KLM flew the Boeing 737-900 to Cairo instead of the normal 777-200ER but sinds the end of March they fly the 777 again. I can understand the reduction of the number of flights. The 777 is more then twice the capacity of the 737-900.

Actually, that's not true.

KLM's 737-900's seat 189 while their 777-200's seat 318 - that's less than twice as many seats.

So pre-revolution they were flying a 777-200 daily = 2226 seats a week in each direction.

Post revolution to March 2012 they've been flying a 737-900 daily = 1323 seats a week in each direction.

And now they will be flying a 777-200 thrice weekly = 954 seats a week in each direction.

So since January 2011 they've more than halved capacity. So it may be a bigger plane but it's actually a drop in numbers overall.

I hope things improve in the summer and make them return to a daily operation.

Yea, the tourism ministry said they expect 14million tourists this year just like before the revolution.

I think that's very doubtful considering how few tourists there are in Cairo, the Red Sea resorts and Luxor/Aswan so far this year... In fact it's a great time to visit - you can always get the hotel pool all to yourself!

Anyhow, Egyptair are offering 20% off all bookings (except for flights to Saudi) made on the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th May. Travel has to be completed by 15th June 2012. It's a good offer if anyone's about to book something! I'm definitely going to take advantage of it!

Sooooooo......

Hey, at last Egyptair have started using their new A330's! I was lucky to be on SU-GDU the other day. And I have started seeing them about the airport at the gates so I'm relieved they're finally in service.

I also notice that two of the A330-200's have been leased out to a Nigerian airline.

And did anyone hear about the Egyptair 737-800 that skid off the runway in Nairobi on 6th June?!
