beautiful Hamburg and those buildings along the canal are quite elegant.
Lubeck, likewise, is a charming city and it reminds me of Venice for its canals.

Hamburg / Lübeck

Jane, capricorn

Yes, Lübeck,Hamburg are special places, as well as Manchester, Liverpool in England, Venice, Rome, Florence in Italy, or Moscow, St.Petersburg in Russia are. But their special status is exclusively a question of our senses, education, intellect, minds, etc, and is not a matter of (manipulated) statistics, respectively likes on facebook or number of postings in forums.
I lived many years in Lübeck, very close to one of those tiny entrances like to the "Nagels Gang" passage below, so could watch from my balcony tourists passing them everyday.
How many entered the gates, courtyards? Hmmm, not more than 5-10 p.c.

"Nagels Gang" and "Vereinigungsgang" on bing maps
"gang" means passage.

(3) Vereinigungsgang, 25 Rosenstraße

Widths of such entrances were then limited by a standard coffin width only, so if you have a rucksack, you won't turn inside. The lowest ones are 1.5 meters height.

The next stage of Lübeck's restoration: 40 plots of the so called "Gründungsviertel" / "founding quarter", completely destroyed during WW2, are being redeveloped now.

Architectural competition has been decided in February 2015:

Many info/pics on internet, just to google "gründungsviertel lübeck".

Why not in Hamburg, btw? The Cremon-Insel for instance ...

Hamburg Unesco

Good news for Maya, so she should be happy reading this when back from sailing.

Hamburg gets second World Heritage Site

"Congratulation to Hamburg for its second World Heritage site! In addtion to the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park which is part of the Dutch-German-Danish Wadden Sea World Heritage inscribed in 2009, today, the World Heritage Committee inscribed the Hamburg Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel on the World Heritage List at its 38th Session in Bonn, Germany."

A good video, in English

Here Maya's pics on Speicherstadt, Kontorhausviertel on pages 16, 17:

Thank you so much for those photos, Maja & Andy!

I think Lübeck is one of the most beautiful cities (with more than 100,00 inhabitants) in Germany, if not the most beautiful. I love those small Hanse/brick style houses! In my opinion Lübeck is even more beautiful than my hometown Heidelberg, which is really hard to beat because Heidelberg was not destoyed during WW2.
