This light rail built to support Asian Games event in 2018 since Palembang officially become co-host with Jakarta as main host. Besides that to provide future mass transportation in the city together with BRT that already operate in the city.
Palembang LRT to begin commercial service in May 2018
Palembang, the provincial capital of South Sumatra, will see the light rail transit (LRT) starting its commercial service in May 2018, an official has said.
South Sumatra governor Alex Noerdin said on Tuesday that the construction of the LRT would be finished at the beginning of Feb 2018. After a trial run for three months, the LRT would be ready for commercial operation in May.

LRT Trains to be Sent to Palembang on April 10 for Trial
State train manufacturer Industri Kereta Api (PT INKA) will send a series of light rail transit (LRT) trains to Palembang on April 10. It will be tested for trial for three months before being fully operational in August for the Asian Games 2018.
INKA Commercialization Director Agung Sedaju said that the work of the 24 train carriages of Palembang LRT has entered the final stage and is ready to be sent for the trials in the city. "We will send it on April 10, the trials will be held until August; for three months. It must be ready for the Asian Games," said Agung in Madiun, Tuesday, March 13.
Participants of Asian Games to use hydrogen-fueled cars
Hydrogen-fueled cars will be operated in the Jakabaring Palembang sports area in South Sumatra Province to transport participants of the 2018 Asian Games.
Governor`s Special Staff for Climate Change Najib Asmani stated here on Monday that his side had held a meeting with Aleksander Gerbec and Ben Todd of the British and Norwegian IMS Ecubes and discussed about hydrogen vehicles.
He further noted that there will be at least 10 small hydrogen-powered cars.
In addition, it is planned to provide big cars during the upcoming Asian Games. The number of the cars is still being discussed by Governor of South Sumatra Alex Noerdin.
He remarked that the use of hydrogen-fueled cars is an effort of the South Sumatra provincial government to ensure clean air, especially in the region of the upcoming international sporting event.
He pointed out that his side will disseminate information on hydrogen energy among students in the province, so they will understand the benefits of using hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles.
Secretary of South Sumatra Province Nasrun Umar had earlier stated that the Jakabaring Palembang sports area will be managed as a pollution-free area; hence, operational vehicles must use fuel with low emissions.
Two LRT Train Sets Ready for Delivery to Palembang
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned train manufacturer PT Industri Kereta Api [PT INKA] has completed constructing two of the eight train sets for the Light Rapid Transit [LRT] Palembang. The two train sets will be sent to Palembang in April.
PT INKA’s senior manager secretary for public relations and CSR, Cholik Mochamad Zam Zam, said he was still awaiting orders to send the train sets to Palembang.
“We have readied two LRT train sets. We are still waiting for orders to send them to Palembang,” he said on Thursday, April 5, 2018.
Two Light Rail Transit (LRT) train sets delivered by PT Industri Kereta Api (PT INKA) have arrived at Boom Baru Palembang Port, South Sumatra on Wednesday morning, April 11, 2018.
Regional Secretary of the South Sumatra Provincial Government Nasrun Umar, said that the trains arrived on schedule, while the remaining six sets of trains will arrive in June 2018.
"Thank God the train set has arrived. It has been a precious moment during the LRT construction since the project development in November 2016. The plan, the train set will be launched before it is installed," Umar said on Wednesday, April 11, 2018.
Six out of 13 Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations are ready to operate in mid-July, which is when they will be inaugurated by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo. The remaining seven stations are still in construction.
Waskita Karya's LRT project chief for South Sumatera Masudi Jauhari said on Tuesday that the stations ready to operate are the ones in SMB II Airport, the Palembang Icon (Picon Mall), Ampera Station, OPI Mall Station, Hajj Boarding Station, and the Jakabaring Station.
Masudi said the stations will be inaugurated by President Widodo on July 15.
Meanwhile, South e Sumatera governor Alex Noerdin said that the province's LRT in Palembang will be the first in Indonesia. Nurdin wants the project to expand greatly so that all residents of Palembang can enjoy, fast and affordable mode of transportation.
As the country’s capital, Jakarta may pride itself as the most connected and wired city with its highly developed infrastructure and telecommunications.
But this time it may have to give credit to Palembang, a city in southern Sumatra and the capital of South Sumatra, which will inaugurate the first light rapid transit (LRT) system in Indonesia.
