Last beam installed on the Waikanae River bridge. It's definitely looking like a bridge now!

The new Kapiti Road offramp layout

Quote:
In partnership with the Kāpiti Coast District Council, Kāpiti Road is being rebuilt in preparation for the interchange.

The new Kāpiti Road layout will feature:

two lanes in each direction between Te Roto Drive and west of Arawhata Road to keep through-traffic flowing two extra turning lanes for vehicles turning right onto the Expressway cycle lanes and footpaths on Kāpiti Road to provide space for pedestrians and cyclists two-lane off-ramps to separate turning traffic traffic lights at the Arawhata Road intersection
a signal-controlled crossing for the new shared pathway that runs for 16km alongside the Expressway. The Kāpiti Road Interchange on and off-ramps are controlled by traffic lights. To manage these extra movements safely, traffic signals at off-ramps and an ‘intelligent’ control system will continually improve signal phasings and smooth traffic flows.

The way these interchanges have been squashed in because of insufficient land looks less than ideal. I hope they don't clog up.

That crash this morning that spread debris all over both sides of SH1 AND the railway line shows how badly this expressway is needed.

There will be two SH1 designations for a while until the old highway is renamed in seven sections:

It was not clear how the dual highways would be dealt with by services such as GPS devices and online maps.
Its not really dual highway. Existing SH1 is a far call from being a highway, so there will actually be only one. GPS Devices (Those that use google maps, Waze, and ios maps etc) will be updated from day 1. There are plenty of online map enthusiasts that are itching to update (myself included).

Reporters like Joel Maxwell really don't have a clue. Updates to roads like this happen on far bigger scales all over the world every day. Roads get renamed without a problem. This should not be an unusual, and worrying task at all.

Looking back at some of the earlier posts in this thread I wonder if people still feel the same way? The SaveKapiti bunch of people seem to have vanished into thin air, and even their website has been shutdown. Its like they never existed at all.

There is still a little bit of noise on facebook (empty barrels make the most noise)

See the facebook group

The project has so far been amazing, and I would argue that it has actually improved the environment and community (about 1.3 million trees and plants have been planted so far). Kapiti is greener, and much more vibrant than ever before.

Labour and the greens were really against this project, and both were threatening to shut it down if elected. Thank goodness they were never elected and its good to see their support on the decline. I wonder if those labour and green supporters will be using the new expressway when it opens?

Now to get transmission gully finished too. After that, our economy will start to boom. No doubt that Kapiti is going to become one of the best suburbs in the Wellington region. Embrace yourselves, its coming!!!

And the biggest gains are yet to come, once they get SH1 out of the Waikanae and Paraparaumu, the towns centres will be able to develop toward the train/bus stations,

Once T/Gully is finished Paikakariki and Pukerua Bay will both take off as even more desirable locations, and I suspect the local council will look at converting a part of the centennenial highway into a cycleway (a 50km local road will not need the full width of SH1) and connect it to the Porirua path that comes through Taupo Swamp and the Queen Elizabeth park trails....and the Expressway path eventually allowing off road cycling from Mana to Otaki

It will be interesting to see how things play out once the full motorway is open re: rest stops. Towns could compete in their offerings to attract motorists who now have to leave the SH1 to grab some food/coffee and/or take a whiz.

Otaki can potentially still survive as it is basically at the end of the line, i.e if you need to stop that is probably where you will stop because TG is finished there is not much south until you actually get to wellington....
