Not totally true !
Allianz Riviera is not situated near to the sea and surrounded by mountains.
Stade Velodrome ( 60meters ) is also an easy prey for the wind

Marseille Stade Velodrome Situation

Nice Allianz Riviera Situation

And, the mistral, a typical very violent wind of Marseille would accelerate the deterioration of the painting.

It's also not a question of prices , because galvanization is more expansive than just a coat of paint

+ ( About the aspect ) The galvanized steel will reflect the blue color of the final LED lighting because of is metallic aspect, and better than the white paint

As I wrote previously, galvanization is more expansive at the beginning indeed, but not on a long term basis (where it becomes cheaper since it's more resistant).

So, obviously yes, this choice was a matter of cost IMHO.

And regarding the climate, again it's a non-issue I think. I picked Nice stadium earlier, but I could have picked numerous other examples* worldwide of stadia built by the sea. The Vélodrome is far from being unique in terms of location you know. .

*e.g the Stade Louis II in Monaco which is built in an area reclaimed from the sea and which has a metallic roof painted in beige and also painted fences...not to mention painted walls and facades etc.
Or again the Pankritio Stadium in Crete which is built right on the beach and has a blue painted roof structure + a white painted concrete facade etc.

Yes, but Monaco is a very rich country.
Not like Marseille who is a poor city.

Yes, Marseille is one of the poorest city in France. Abnormally high rate of people living below the poverty line. Coupled with a record public debt.

The renderings looked so promising. Unfortunately, the "real thing" it's a bit disappointing, nonetheless I can't wait to see it finished.

The roof is now entirely self-supported. The process of removal of the temporary towers is going on:

I don't understand why everyone moans about this renovation.

I think it is absolutely awesome, and puts the Stade Velodrome up in the top 5 stadiums in the world.

Will more seats be installed when the old floodlights are removed?

It would give the first ten rows a bowl feel, which would be excellent.

It is a very nice renovation, but top 5 is too much. There is a lot of wonderful stadiums out there. Even if we take just Europe.

I don't think it's a top stadium either, but it sure is very out of the ordinary.
Like the city itself, actually.

I like it very much but I think the issues which get criticism are fairly obvious, and I respect the others not letting go over these issues.

What's true is that from now on it will only get better and better.

IMO, redeveloped stadiums are more distinctive than most new stadiums, because the designers have to do more bold approaches in order to keep the old design while adding new features. For example, I'm sure that we never will see a shell-shaped roof like Marsella's in a new stadium.
