Osaka Loop Line 323 Series

Quote:
With rail buffs waiting excitedly to crowd in, West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) introduced the first train dedicated to serving this city’s loop line on Dec. 24.

The launch of the new train is meant to standardize all trains serving the Osaka Loop Line to a three-door type. The loop line has been serviced by differing types of trains whose number of doors varied, inconveniencing commuters.

After a ceremony was held to mark the launch of the 323-series at the company’s rail yard earlier on Dec. 24, the train arrived in JR Kyobashi Station past 4 p.m., where a huge crowd of railway fans with cameras were waiting.

The 103-series and 201-series that were developed when JR West was part of Japanese National Railways before it was privatized in 1987 had four doors per car.

After privatization, JR West introduced another type of train that had three doors per car.

The new train, which comes with three doors a car, will replace those with four doors. That is expected to make it easier to install train gates that are designed to prevent commuters from falling on the tracks.

JR West said seats on the 323-series are more comfortable, and it has become the first commuter train installed with surveillance cameras and air purifiers on some cars on a trial basis.

The train, which bears lines of orange, the symbol color of the loop line, on the silver body, will display an illuminated Christmas tree with light-emitting diode bulbs on the front of the first car by the end of Dec. 25.

It will be joined by two more new trains by the year-end. A total of 21 323-series will run on the loop line by the end of March 2019.

Ground-breaking ceremony held for new Yamanote Line station
Quote:
Work commenced Friday on a new station for the Yamanote Line, the first addition to central Tokyo’s loop line since 1971.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) and the Urban Renaissance Agency, an affiliate of the infrastructure ministry, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new station attended by JR East President Tetsuro Tomita and UR chief Masahiro Nakajima.

It will sit between Shinagawa and Tamachi stations on the Minato Ward waterfront and be close to Sengakuji Station on the Toei Asakusa subway line and Keikyu Corp.’s Keikyu train line.

The station, which hasn’t been named yet, is tentatively set to open in spring 2020 ahead of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games that summer. It will be the 30th station on the Yamanote, which connects the capital’s major stations and downtown hubs.

The new stop, designed by architect Kengo Kuma, features wooden sections and a white roof inspired by shoji. Kuma also designed the new National Stadium for the Olympics.

The plan is part of a redevelopment project for the former rail yard between Shinagawa and Tamachi stations. The area, close to Haneda airport, is expected to become Tokyo’s new gateway and house one the terminal stations for the high-speed maglev train that will link Shinagawa with Nagoya, presumably in 2027.

The developers plan to start full-fledged operations at the new station in 2024.

Tokyo transport bureau starts phone interpretation services
Quote:
The Tokyo metropolitan government’s Bureau of Transportation started offering an over-the-phone interpretation service in January for foreign customers in five foreign languages at Toei Subway stations and select Nippori-Toneri Liner stations.

The service is aimed at making it easier for foreigners to communicate at stations by enabling them to talk directly with an operator to solve issues such as the train lines and transfers required to reach their destinations.

When foreign customers ask station staff about something in a foreign language, the staff will call an interpretation call center commissioned by the bureau. The foreign customers can then tell an operator at the center their inquiries and the operator will interpret it for the station staff. The station staff then tells the operator the appropriate response and the operator interprets this to the foreign customers.

The service is available at Toei Subway stations excluding those operated by a different train company (Oshiage, Meguro, Shirokanedai, Shirokane-Takanawa and Shinjuku stations), and Nippori and Nishi-Nippori stations on the Nippori-Toneri Liner. Interpretation is available in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Portuguese.

Before this service was available, station staff provided explanations about payment, connections and other issues to foreign customers using a board with illustrations. However, by interpreting their questions and relevant information, it will be possible for both sides to convey in more detail what each side wants to say.

In this day and age it is ESPECIALLY important to ensure the dissemination of as much as possible as widely as possible.

There's a reason I spent twenty minutes copying everything over.
