The Pearl of the Orient has been around for many years, and remains the most famous and pervasive reference to Hong Kong.

City of Life is just the old tourism board's slogan for their marketing campaign. It's not really a nickname at all.

Honky is offensive to White Peopler perhaps, but for Hong Kong people living overseas, being called "Hongkie" - i think its okay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honky

The word honky as a term for whites derives from bohunk and hunky. In the early 1900's, these were derogatory terms for Bohemian, Hungarian, and Polish immigrants. According to Robert Hendrickson, author of the Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins, Black workers in Chicago meat-packing plants picked up the term from white workers and began applying it indiscriminately to all Caucasians.

Honky was later adopted as a pejorative meaning white in 1967 by black militants within SNCC seeking a rebuttal for the term ******. They settled on a familiar word they felt was disparaging to certain Americans of European descent; hunkie meaning an American of Slavic or Hungarian descent.[1][2]

The word 'honkie' was also used in the early to mid 1900's to describe a rich, white man searching for a black hooker. White men would be terrified to enter the actual ghettos so they would honk their horns where they felt safe. Since only rich people drove cars then, black prostitutes knew a honking horn meant a rich payday. Therefore, the word 'honkie' came to fruition.

Hmm... but Shanghai also has an "Oriental Pearl" Tower. Is Shanghai trying to steal Hong Kong's nickname?

Shanghai was also named "Paris of The East"

Oriental may sound offensive to some,(not me personally though), Orient is perfectly fine to use.

I can't believe I missed this thread.

Shanghai was known as a very metropolitan city in the beginning of the 20th century, the Paris of the Orient is a well deserved nickname. The Shanghai were quite snobbish about their city

But for HK, of course

東方之珠

so much better than Asia's World City

Shanghai lost its charm during the communist takeover. But the city today is as vibrant as HK. It may not be the most vibrant city in Asia but its much alive compared back before the mid 90s

I think both the Pearl of the Orient AND Asia's world city, are great nicks for HK. However i think that Pearl of the orient have a more historical feeling to it, and Asia's world city have a more contemporary/modern feel to it, now with globalization and all. Anyways i choose Asia's world city, since i believe you should look more to the future then at the history, even though the history is important as well...

Yes, Hong Kong is also known as "Asia's World City" ~ with its dragon symbol, a new branding campaign by HKTB and BrandHK.gov.hk
