Source: http://newscontent.cctv.com/NewJsp/n...?fileId=396616 ( Feb 18, 2017 )

Quote:
The construction of a bridge linking Haikou City of south China's Hainan Province and its artificial Ruyi Island got underway on Saturday, the first bridge with six functions combined in one, including highway and tram transportation, water delivery and power grid.

The 5666.26-meter-long and 27.5-meter-wide cross-sea bridge, located in Meilan District of Haikou City, is expected to open to traffic by the first half of 2019.

The bridge sets a record as the first in China to offer passage for trams and other vehicles, and to serve as a multi-function channel for water pipes, high voltage grid, gas pipelines, and optical fiber for telecommunications.

The bridge will cross the Qiongzhou Strait, with its water ten to 15 meters deep on average and waves there often six meters high.

In addition, the projects will face the challenges of adverse weather including gale, fog, thunderstorm, tide and ocean current.

"According to the design, the cross-sea bridge linking Ruyi Island with Haikou City should be able to resist 17-level typhoon (wind speed of 56.1-61.2 meters per second) and over 8- magnitude earthquake. It is the most solid cross-sea bridge with the highest gale-resistant and quake-resistant standards in the country," said He Changsong, project manager of the second branch of the China Railway 18 Engineering Group Co.Ltd.
