Aye very good news, --and hopefully we get some buildings of good Architecture, --btw, --apart from the proposed Business District and some retail, --seems they also want residential Development too, --just got to hope this news will get things moving now, cheers.

As far as I know, that's the plan, but Ministry of Justice have to pitch the scheme for funding in the next Spending Review Round (due after the next election). If I was Paul Watson, I'd be offering to build the thing for them (or at least borrow the cash on their behalf). The knock-on effects of building that thing would be huge for Vaux - look at what the courts complex did for Newcastle Quayside. Lots of well-paid lawyers brought into the city centre, ready made tenants for offices on the Vaux site, occupants for hotels, etc.

The site is being labelled a business district but does anyone know what type of business this is being aimed at or how its being marketed to them? Ive not read anything other than they expect the 4000 jobs but is this just expected to be a city centre doxford park?

Lets hope we see the investment bearing in mind the £33.5m thats been invested so far (£20m the council and HCA paid in buying the site of tescos plus the £13.5m on the re alignment of the road) realistically will we see £200m of investment? I hope we see more like £250-300m to get the top quality area it deserves but cant see it happening.

I agree with br on the Farringdon Row project, they should try and push it so to redevelop the current court houses along with the square.

I noticed a few weeks ago the work has started out the back of Argos in prep for the works later this year.

Regarding the proposed Business Centre, ----I haven't read anything about business who would set up there, ---suppose there could be a few different business's, --maybe some might relocate, --and if the proposed Justice Centre gets the nod, --then maybe some law/legal firms could set up ?---anyway, --Developments will probably be led by private sector investment, --personally I would like to see the Council relocate, -----but which ever business sets up, --it all has to be good for the local economy, --cheers.

Its a good question and im not sure anyone really knows what kind of business will be based on Vaux, however; my bet would be on a big energy company like GE or EDF to link in with the offshore and low carbon development at the Port. I'd love to see Sunderland develop as a hub for offshore and renewable energy.

Balfour Beatty wins £13m Sunderland road revamp
Aaron Morby | Tue 23rd April | 7:00

Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering has been chosen to carry out a crucial road realignment to unlock the development of a former Brewery site in Sunderland.

The job involves the realignment and construction of a two-lane dual carriageway/boulevard, stretching for 500m along the A183 Livingstone Road and St Mary’s Way.

A council spokesman said: “The new road is designed to simplify traffic flow and improve the connection between Vaux, the city centre and the rest of Sunderland.

WORK to transform the road network around Sunderland’s former Vaux brewery site is set to start in the early summer.

Construction giant Balfour Beatty has won the contract to realign St Mary’s Way and Livingstone Road, as part of work to improve the site.

City council leader Paul Watson said: “It’s great news we have now appointed Balfour Beatty to carry out this vital scheme for the city centre.

“It’s the first step in the council’s ambitious city centre capital investment programme, which will realise the long-term vision we and our partners set out in the Economic Masterplan.”

A key aim of that plan is to get more people living and working in the city centre.

Cool, just spotted the article on the Echo web site. Good to hear news about progress. It annoys me every time I pass the police station and court when you get people doing 35 mph (past the police station FFS) to get into the middle lane going towards Hylton Road.
Also at the small roundabout where the lights are scare me as vehicles cut across the part of the road markings and almost hit you head on, or some numpty in a van comes in on the right hand lane, but goes straight into the left and cuts you off. Eye, looking forwards to the re-alignment... not sure about the roadworks, but that's progress.

I did think at one point they might go underground up to the St Marys car park foot bridge coming back up at the wear bridge round about. So it would go undergroud at the round about near the Wearview House (green building), similar to how it does in Newcastle. That would cost too much, but an interesting thought, as it would have meant all that area would be pedestrianised.

Yeah I have seen some lunatics flying around those roads, --I'm surprised there haven't been more accidents, ---regarding the road going underground, ---this was proposed some time ago,--and at one time was included in the Councils blue print, --it did include a Tunnel/Underpass --which as you said--would have seen a large area pedestrianized, --anyway that's all changed now, --and hopefully work will begin soon---and will take about 10/12 months to complete, --cheers.
