Running club seeking 100 athletes to take part in 100th Shildon parkrun



A RUNNING club is keen to attract 100 athletes to help it to celebrate its centenary parkrun.

Shildon Running and Athletic Club holds a 5km parkrun each Saturday in Hackworth Park, in Shildon, from 9am.

The club, based at the Stadium 2000, on Middridge Lane, in Shildon, aims to hold its 100th parkrun on Saturday, February 14.

The BBC antiques programme Flog It is set to be filmed in Barnard Castle on Thursday, March 12.

Magna Carta contest launches Bishop Auckland arts festival

A POPULAR Bishop Auckland arts festival has been launched with the winners of a Magna Carta-themed competition.

Pupils from Cockton Hill Junior School beat off tough competition to claim first prize with their individual clay tablets inspired by the gathering of barons at the signing of the Magna Carta 800 years ago.

A GROUP that immerses itself in the scenes and stories of a town’s past is embracing the age of new media by launching a website.

The Tudhoe and Spennymoor Local History Society has compiled a history of the town and surrounding area for the site at durhamweb.org.uk/tslhs

President Don Rippon said: “We really wanted to get the word out about what the society is doing and feel it is important to record and share what we have.

“We are doing well for membership numbers but always welcome new members, there could be people with an interest in local history who don’t know about the availability of the society.

Volunteer ran museum in Spennymoor attracts visitors from abroad

A GROUP of Portuguese students plan to visit a North-East museum to discover how the region’s mining heritage mirrors their own.

Durham Mining Museum in Spennymoor, County Durham, will host a secondary school from Sao Pedro da Cova, in northern Portugal, in late spring.

The youngsters are exploring the long history of coal mining in their own communities and want to discover more about the similarities with the old Durham coalfield.

A TIRELESS community worker, dedicated to supporting people in need, has been awarded a Chairman’s Medal in recognition of for her work.

North Pennines AONB calls for volunteers to record peat depth


The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help measure and record peat depth at the top of the South Tyne valley.

The event will take place on Saturday March 7, from 10am to 3pm, and involves using drainage rods to measure the peat depth on the moor and recording the results with GPS units.

Dales plea to ambulance service

PEOPLE living in some of the most remote parts of the region made an emotional plea to ambulance chiefs to protect their emergency services.

Residents of Teesdale and Weardale, in County Durham, urged the North East Ambulance Service to keep dedicated crews in both dales at a board meeting in Stanhope, yesterday. (Thursday, February 26)

The pleas came amidst growing concern about the strain on the ambulance service, its response times and staffing changes - though bosses deny the service is in crisis and say it meets response targets.

A NORTH-EAST boxer celebrated winning a national title at the England Boxing Youth Championship finals held in Ferryhill.

More acts revealed to play Kendal Calling

More acts have been announced for this year’s Kendal Calling festival including the line up for the event’s dance-filled Glow Tent.


Cumbria’s biggest music festival has released on Twitter the names of more than 20 new acts set to play there and join the headliners on the Main Stage with more still to be announced.

Groove Armada and Less Than Jake are set to play Lowther Deer Park when the festival opens on July 30.

Display of working model locomotives to go on show in Shildon railway museum

MODEL railway enthusiasts will show off their work with a display of steam and diesel engines.

The GL5 Association exhibition at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon will be the group’s first ever display of five inch gauge railway models.


The exhibit will draw on British mainline layouts for inspiration and will feature both running steam and diesel engines.

Pam Porter, events officer at Locomotion, said: “I’m very excited to welcome back the GL5 Association to Locomotion.
