Project Information:
Chennai's airport's is currently being upgraded in light of the booming air traffic in the Indian aviation. The modernization and expansion of the airport will be done by mid 2011.

The upgradation plan includes the construction of a new domestic terminal, expansion and renovation of the existing Anna International terminal, renovation of the existing domestic terminal, extension of the secondary runway, construction of a new parallel runway and cargo terminal, taxiways and parking bays amongst others.

The new Domestic Terminal:

A team of architects comprising Frederic Schwartz Architects, Hargreaves Associates, and Gensler based in the United States and Creative Group, New Delhi was selected to design the new terminal.

With the addition of the new terminal, expansion of the international terminal and existing domestic terminal, the Chennai International Airport will be able to handle 16 million passengers/annum by 2011.

The design of the terminal is organised around “two lush sustainable gardens” and the wing-like roofs which helps collect rainwater and become part of the garden.

The new terminal will be spread across 70,000 sq m.

Walkthrough video:

The new terminal would have 72 passenger check-in counters.

Nice pics Arul

Great Job! Arul. Progress seems slow. As there should be more work that needs to be done inside than just erecting the structures. But glad to see there is visible improvement.

Just pondering if there is any possibility for the Parallel runway (not the secondary that is getting built?) OR is it a dead case?

Will also be nice to get similar pics on the secondary runway.

^^ This is a massive construction. With tons of money being spent for this including the Metro Rail connectivity, I really doubt if the 2nd airport at Sriperumbudur will come up in the next 10 or 15 years. There will be some political rhetoric here and there; for the most part, people won't bother about it and nothing concrete will happen.

By the way, nowhere in India we have 2 airports operating in the same sectors; part of it is due to competition and pressure from the private companies who have spent lots of money in developing their airport and wouldn't want to lose out money to another airport. This is a problem even with the competing airports in London.

New runway raises safety fears

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/new-runway-raises-safety-fears-391

May 30: The recent crash of the Air India jet in Mangalore which claimed 158 lives has raised safety concerns about the new secondary runway at Chennai’s Anna International Airport. Airport sources told this newspaper that the authorities have paid little heed to the large amount of rubber deposit on the runway that stretches across the Adyar River.

Rubber deposit on a tarmac can lead to a plane skidding out of control while taking off or landing. “No safety measures have been taken while laying the rubber during the construction of the secondary runway. This has resulted in uneven rubber deposits,” said Capt. A. Ranganathan, a leading aviation expert.

“As it is the first runway being built across a river in the country, the Airports Authority of India should have ensured the highest levels of safety were followed in the construction.” However, a senior Airports Authority of India official in charge of ground operations claimed that there is no need to worry about the rubber deposit and that it is rain that poses a major threat.

“Not only does operating aircraft in heavy rain increase the operational danger, but there are many loopholes and relaxations in Indian aviation guidelines which need to be addressed urgently,” he said. “We have already improved the surface drainage and pavement grooving effectively on the new runway to allow for safe landing of aircraft, even those of greater weight, and at higher landing speeds,” the Airports Authority of India official added.

^^Really Bizarre Story. Safety has to be #1 but in our country it's the last priority on the list if it even makes the list:eek:hno:

I was not talking about the airport at Sriperumbudur but rather the new domestic terminal that is in construction. What happens to the old domestic terminal once the new one is constructed?

^^Nice Updates
Seems like the International Terminal expansion can accomodate 2 more 747s, but will the Kamraj domestic terminal be converted to international with the new domestinc terminal in place?
After completion, the actual international terminal will be the current terminal + the expanded area. The old domestic terminal would continue to operate, Maybe airlines would be split between the two terminals for better utilization.

Airport to get more parking stands

SOURCE : Times of India

CHENNAI: Chennai airport is soon going to be a favourite place for airlines to park their aircraft at night as Airports Authority of India (AAI) will be constructing more parking stands in the coming months.

This expansion will be a boon to airlines as parking stands at all major airports are full. Improvements to ground infrastructure at airports have not kept pace with fleet expansion announced by airlines. This mismatch is expected to work in favour of Chennai. Besides, parking an aircraft at the airport here is much cheaper than the rates charged by private airports at Mumbai and Delhi, said a senior official of Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The airport currently has 65 bays and eight more would be constructed in the space between the secondary runway and the main runway, said airport director Hareendranathan E P. Four parking bays have already been built. But, they are yet to be commissioned.

Seven more are coming up near the a linkway that connects both the runways. These are remote parking stands because they are not near the terminal. Aircraft will have to taxi through taxiway and the linkway to reach these stands. These parking stands would be used primarily for night parking, Hareendranathan said.

"We are also planning to build 10 to 15 parking stands when the ongoing expansion works are completed. AAI has asked for permission to build the bays. These bays will be required to meet the increased need for parking space when the airport will handle more aircraft movement after the expansion by next year end," said an AAI official.

These additional parking stands are included in the masterplan prepared for expansion of the airport, the official added.

Parking rates are determined based on the weight of the aircraft. Chennai airport charges Rs 410 per hour for a A320-type aircraft that weighs within 100 metric ton. If the aircraft weighs more than 100 metric tonnes, a nominal amount is charged per extra metric ton in addition to the Rs 410.

Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) is studying the several tariff charged by different airports. The body will soon be rationalising the rates across all airports. However, it will take some time. "Till then Chennai airport will be the best bet for airlines to park their flights as this kind of addition of parking space is not happening anywhere else," the official added.

Is the timeline the usual TOI sodappal ?? or a scarier possibility of the airport expansion ending in 2011 ?

Other than that this is great news

It is ‘too hot’ inside Chennai airport

CHENNAI: For over a month now, the airconditioning units at the Chennai airport have been dysfunctional. According to airport sources, problems started when two airconditioning units were shifted owing to terminal expansion and the compressor in the other six units failed.

"It has been more than a month since this issue was taken up with Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials. In fact, a passenger at the international terminal passed out because of lack of air circulation. For, the building does not have a ventilation system. You end up feeling giddy because the AC does not work and the low oxygen," said an airport official at the domestic terminal.

According to another operator, the domestic terminal resembled a fish market around 10 days ago. "There are about 2,500 people in the evening in an area that has seating for only 250.... One AAI employee was even manhandled by an enraged Indigo passenger in frustration," he said.

The problem, however, is prevalent in both domestic and international terminals. "The aerobridges are hot. It is almost impossible to sit and work. Is it justified to collect a user development fee from a passenger when he is not given adequate facilities?" wondered an airport operator.

The issue, they say, is not power failure as the airport has 18hour power backup.

For his part, airport director Hareendranathan E P said: "We'd shifted two AC plants as part of the ongoing work. Today, the chilled waterline was punctured during excavation work, which led to AC failure in both terminals. It will be resolved by Monday."

^^goldmine- I suspect that the comment from dragonman was meant to be a sarcastic comment on the sorry state of Indian officialdom where you cannot find any information easily. It is actually quite funny - if you can see the funny side that is!
neohistoryman..I understand now.

Earlier, I meant to say that, "I do not understand the language". Asked my indian friend and he couldn't explain it either. Hence the reply to dragonman. Thank you.
