Yes, thanks for your concern. Our son was driving home from work along the 401 Highway, the highway parallels runway 24L and he was pacing the aircraft along the 401 and he said he couldn't hear any engine noise. I think that maybe the engines had been shut down by a lightning strike. The airport had been on 'RED ALERT' on and off, since about noon (our time). A 'RED ALERT' means that all work outside on the ramp around aircraft must cease due to lightning in the vacinity and no one is allowed outside the buildings until the all clear siren is sounded.

The accident occured about 1600 hours local time. He said the plane started to skid then straightened up and plunged off the end of the runway into the ravine. There is a small river that meanders through the ravine called the Etobicoke Creek. My home backs onto the Etobicoke Creek but about twelve miles to the north and west of the crash location. Good news is that there were no fatalities and only minor injuries. In that area there are twelve westbound lanes of the 401 and they are still closed (19:40 hours). The airport has six (6) runways, two have been closed.

This is the second aircraft that has plunged into the ravine off the end of this runway. Back in 1978 a Air Canada DC9 plunged into the creek and cought fire with the loss of two lives. I was working at the airport on that day and assisted in retrieving pax from the crash site. Runway 24L at Toronto Pearson is 9,000 feet long.

I'm fine. Was on the Highway 48 down from Orillia when I heard the news on the radio. Scary considering I will have to use the airport on Saturday. Glad everyone was okay. Watching events unfold here at the house on CP24. Shocking...

Hey Accy, how do you like my city? Did you attend Carabana on the weekend? Glad you dodged the bullets on Dundas Square. What do you think of the heat and humidity?

The weather couldnt be better. We've been staying at my aunties cottage in Orillia on Lake Simcoe since last monday. Only got back to Markham today. Went into Downtown TO last Sunday. Loved it yet again. Gave the islands a miss this time and focussed more on the streets and the harbourfront.
Weather has been fab. Some great thunderstorms to add a little flavour too.
Didnt goto Carabana cos we were in Orillia at the time (from past experience, I find Carabana to be a little on the rough side), but the Kempenfest in Barrie was just as good.

Got loads of great pics for when I get back

But don't post them on the Manc forum and compare them, favourably, with anything in Manchester, we wouldn't want to set off EarlyBird again.

If you haven't done so yet, I would recommend a visit to Union Station to take some interior pics. The interior of the station is, IMO, a work of art and every bit as impressive as New York's Grand Central Station.

Could be something to do with the air conditioning.
