New council to write ending to twin towers storeys

October 30, 2012 - 9:08pm By LAURA FRASER City Hall Reporter

The future of Skye Halifax will be decided by the new council after the outgoing municipal politicians voted to push the $350-million downtown development into the newcomers’ hands.

The twin 44-storey towers are 106 metres higher than allowed by HRM by Design in that part of the city, which prompted the design and review committee to twice reject the mammoth proposal. In October, the committee again recommended council do the same.

Tuesday’s deferral means the incoming council will be tested on its commitment to the municipal development blueprint upon which many councillors campaigned.

The two towers would be built on the former Tex-Park site, bounded by Granville, Hollis and Sackville streets.

In 2005, United Gulf Developments Ltd. planned to build what became known as the Twisted Sisters on that lot. Those 27-storey towers were eventually approved by council, and later by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board after heritage groups appealed the development....

if these don't get approved I think it will be a missed opportunity for Halifax. I think they'd be brilliant additions to Halifax's skyline. I recall there being height limits in Mississauga once due to the close proximity of Pearson airport to MCC. ...well that was eventually tossed... one just needs to look at our twisted sisters (Marilyn Monroe/Absolute towers).

I personally would love to see this development move forward. The design is beautiful.

The twin towers would give Halifax skyline a big boost for sure.

Here's the render

Q Lofts set to rise in north-end Halifax

December 17, 2012 - 7:02pm By REMO ZACCAGNA Business Reporter

Construction work continues at the intersection of Maynard and Robie streets on Monday afternoon. Polycorp is developing 'green' Q-lofts on the site.

Construction of a multimillion-dollar condominium project in north-end Halifax began Friday.

Concrete work on the Q Lofts, a $10-million to $20-million 72-unit condominium building on Roberts Street, just off James Street, is in full swing, with the first section of the footings poured Friday.

Pouring of the insulated concrete form perimeter walls in the parkade started Monday morning.

Developer Peter Polley, head of Polycorp Properties Inc., said construction was to begin last April, soon after a 15,000-square-foot industrial building at 5666 Roberts St. was demolished, with a completion date of next summer or early fall.

But a variety of factors, including a municipal building permit that “took quite a period” to procure, delayed the starting date until now.

The Q Lofts building will have a unique layout, with two-level units featuring 4.8-metre cathedral ceilings in the living room and front entry and a large bedroom loft overlooking the lower level.

Polley said they’re aiming to achieve platinum status from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and preliminary LEED scoring is “looking very good.”

Among the environmentally friendly features are a large hot-air solar collector that will cover almost the entire south end of the building, and a greywater heat recovery system that will allow heat to be extracted from sewage greywater before it is discharged into the municipal sewer system.

In-floor radiant heating, central geothermal heating, triple-glazed windows, solar thermal walls and extra insulation inside the perimeter walls are also being planned for the building.....
