Most Kierbedzia - Kierbedz Bridge

Some new images have surfaced of pre-war Warsaw today, and three of them are high quality photos taken by a pre-war tourist from Netherlands of the Kierbedz bridge.

Constructed 1859-1864

The bridge was built at the initiative of the Society of Russian Railways. The first plan was that this bridge would serve railway purposes connecting the St. Petersburg Station (now Vilnius station) with the Dworec Wiedenski (Vienna-station) in Warsaw. However the idea was abandoned due to the fact that it was an unpopular choice to lead a railway directly next to the old town, and the bridge was completed only as a road (with lanes for trams).

Btw: A new railway bridge was built a few years later, north to the Kierbedz bridge, next to the Warsaw Citadel (the bridge at the Citadel, today Most Gdanski, Gdansk bridge).

History behind the bridge
Although the Kierbedz Bridge was the first permanent bridge to be constructed since the time of Sigismund Augustus, and the construction of a permanent bridge was passed way back to the Four-Year Sejm (1788-1792), the local press did not mention the construction and progress of the work.

The reason behind this was due to the fact that bridge was finished in 1864, the same year, which the January uprising (powstanie styczniowe) was crushed by the russians and that the main designer was Stanisław Kierbedź - A Pole with a high degree in the Russian military as a general.

Until WWI the bridge bore the name of Alexander bridge (named after Tsar Alexander II). Commonly, however, the bridge was called Kierbedz bridge (from the name of the designer and builder). After Poland regained its independence and the reconstruction (change of the design of the central part of the bridge) after the russian demolition of the bridge during their retreat in 1915 the bridge was officially renamed to Most Kierbedzia (Kierbedz bridge).

The bridge was again destroyed (together with all the other bridges in Warsaw) during the Warsaw Uprising on Sept. 13, 1944 by the German army retreating to the left bank of the Vistula River in front of the Red Army.
