Last leg of Mumbai Metro train trials begins
Manthan K Mehta,TNN | Feb 1, 2014, 03.30 AM IST

MUMBAI: The process to begin commercial operations of the Metro rail has received momentum as the oscillation and emergency braking distance trials began on Friday.

"The Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) began the last of leg of trials between Versova to Ghatkopar. After the tests are conducted by a 10-member team, RDSO will submit its report to the chief commissioner of railway safety, Lucknow, for final certification," said a spokesperson of Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL).

Oscillation trials are conducted to test the track-worthiness of a new or modified design of rolling stock. "Emergency braking distance trials aim at testing the braking potential," said the spokesperson.

MMOPL had sought a maximum speed limit of 90 kmph under test conditions and if it is found feasible, the maximum operational speed will be allowed

. "If the RDSO is satisfied with the test results, it will issue a provisional speed certificate and MMOPL can approach the commissioner for Metro rail safety (CMRS) for safety trials."

After detailed tests, the CMRS will authorize starting operations on the stretch. The final approval will be given by the ministry of railways. -Manthan K Mehta

Reliance Infrastructure promoted MMOPL says, "RDSO is an important statutory body for certifying Metro safety. We have internally tested entire Metro System satisfactorily for some time now; we are confident that RDSO will be satisfied with the system performance and certify the requisites."

Doesn't this shed look just like regular Indian Railways sheds.
I hope the rest of the Mumbai metro yards are better designed, with modern train cleaning n repair facilities.
Thats not the whole of it. From what it looks it seems to be a shelter to park the train rakes i.e stabling lines. Generally IR doesn't even have shelters for stabling lines.

Thane MLAs threaten dharna if mono-metro demand not met
B B Nayak,TNN | Feb 2, 2014, 03.26 PM IST

THANE: Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Thane have threatened to stage a dharna in the Mumbai monorail during the assembly session starting from February 24, if their demands for mono-metro rail in Thane are not met.

One of the MLAs who has threatened to participate in the agitation, Pratap Sarnaik, said that if the CM failed to announce metro for Thane before February 24, then they will sit in the monorail, which was opened on Saturday in Mumbai, when the assembly is in function to stage their dharna .

Owing to insufficient public transport system in Thane, Sena MLAs Eknath Shinde, Rajan Vichare and Sarnaik have threatened to stage an agitation for the monorail that was inaugurated on February 1 in Mumbai against the step-motherly treatment meted out by the state government.

However, the leaders came in for a surprise when deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar made metro rail for Thane a poll plank during his speech during the launching of the state-wide national food security scheme at Patni ground near Vitawa on Friday. On the other hand, chief minister (CM) Prithviraj Chavan remained non-committal on the announcement.

Taking a cue from the CM's response, Thane MLAs have threatened the dharna move.

Thaneites are deprived of mass transit system like the monorail that has been facilitated for Mumbai and have often complained of lack of public transport provisions in the city as compared to Mumbai.

Sarnaik said, because of the hypocritical attitude of the government, we have dashed off a strong worded letter to the CM to take an immediate decision to approve our long standing proposal for metro-mono rail in the city.

"In the metro proposal, the Thane Municipal Corporation is to chip in 10 per cent whereas both central and state government have to share 20 per cent apiece as remaining 50 per cent expenditure will be funded by financial institutes. When Nagpur, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwas, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai got their due why this cruelty for Thane, which is growing rapidly?" said Sarnaik.

I though we would see a number of infra projects being announced or signed in the past week but this shameless , lazy CM still hasnt moved his ass beyond his chair . There's news that LS elections will be in March or April which means that the election code of conduct will soon be announced .
Looks like nothing good is gonna happen in 2014

From what I know, some cities are taking DMRC's help in designing and planning. I wish Mumbai did too..I don't want it to end up looking substandard. Mumbai metro will have to tolerate a lot more wear and tear than the metro of any other city. They need to build the stations and all carefully.
Yes apart from Delhi DMRC is also involved in Kochi Metro....DMRC was able to be so called successful in Delhi because of the huge space Delhi provides...and due to the CWG, DMRC was given a lot of powers....today same DMRC is facing lot of problems in Kochi Metro...had they been in Mumbai....they would've been again in the state of Chaos...!!

Well it was pre planned delay to start these projects just before election

Corrupt congress won't get it right this time ... Fooling Indians has always been their agenda

All these projects should have started in 2011
Also we should have been preparing for line 2 and 3 by 2016
line 2 and 3 should have been operational by 2011. Phase 2 (ghatkopar- mulund and more lines) were to be completed by 2016

I think CM is realistic and knows MMRDA well. He knows the actual speed of execution. Though he should have piched in long back and got line 2 issues sorted out and started work on it.

^^
Leave aside other things he should have atleast got the waterway project moving . He didnt have to wait for so long to decide that the Oval-Virar elevated corridor wasnt feasible as per the present plan . He could have given his consent for the widening of the Sion-Panvel highway creek bridge .
