For reference, the Financial Times building (1330 6th Ave.) just to the west is 496 feet tall.

the design has since been tweaked, but it's a good visualization.

I was starting to wonder how much of an impact this would make on the skyline. I was disappointed at first but am starting to feel more optimistic as I see it rise above its neighbors.

I had the same feeling, but from Central Park (particularly the Pond) you really do notice it stand out at this point.

It's unfortunate the building had to suffer a height decrease. It's a great design and the original height would have worked in the location.

the tragedy of it is that if it were proposed any time in the last few years rather than before the recession, the height cut would never had happened.

For comparison: The Museum Tower to the left is 588 ft. (179 meter) tall. So 53W53 surpasses the 600ft mark. (184 meter) distinctly.

I have totally underestimated the impact this will have when seen from the top of the rock, it already has a great impact and still has about 130 more meters to rise.

I haven't been following all of this very closely until very recently. I know that this tower was initially proposed over 10 years ago, but what exactly happened with the height reduction? Was it financial issues? I apologize for being out of the loop.

The city council or whoever claimed that the top of the building needs redesign because the previous design exposed technical equipemtn to the skyline and another reason for the final height reduction was, that nothing should peak above the ESb so close in midtown, while 15 Penn Plaza which is just a block away from the ESb was already aproved. If you summarize it all, a lot of bullshit occured until this finally took of. I am glad with the 320m, allthough I of course would have prefered the 380m version.

That is a shame. I hate that kind of thinking. Didn't the same thing happen with the Central Park Tower to not make it taller than 1WTC? **** that, we need to build taller. Not to be negative, but sometimes I feel like NY is not as innovative as it used to be.

Edit: I guess I shouldn't say it's not as innovative with all these new supertalls and especially the really skinny ones going up. This supertall boom in NY is definitely unprecedented. I just think we shouldn't be afraid of old icons being overtaken. Well, I guess we did move passed this now, with all the other towers in Midtown taller than the Empire going up. But I wonder how long it'll be until we get something taller than 1WTC?

Yes but the impact it will not be huge after Steinway building has a height greater than tower vers it s just behind that tower

CPT is taller than 1 WTC by parapet height. It´s just a slim spire that eclipses the CPT.
