Diamond City may soon get virtual agro malls
TNN | Jun 13, 2013, 05.00 AM IST SURAT: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has now come up with the concept of country's first 'virtual agro mall' to be developed in the Diamond City that would allow residents to shop for fruits, vegetable and flowers at the click of a mouse. Inaugurating India's first 'Krishi Bazaar' or agro mall set up by Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Sahara Darwaja on Wednesday, Modi said, "I want to see the first virtual agro mall in the city of food lovers. Soon residents would be able to shop for vegetable and fruits from their laptops and computers while sitting at home. The project will also provide employment to more than 35000 youths for making the delivery of the products ordered online." He said very soon there will be no vegetable vendors coming at the doorsteps to sell vegetables. He called upon the APMCs across the state to strive to develop virtual agro malls to cater to needs of consumers. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the agro mall at Indoor Stadium, Modi said, "The agro mall will bring farmers and the end consumers closer. The vegetable and fruits at the bazaar are available at a cheaper rate." Modi refrained from commenting on the present state of affairs in BJP. However, he made a comment that is left for political observers to interpret. He said, "Usually the monsoon arrives after June 15, but this time it has arrived early on June 9. However, this is an indication of more prosperity for the farmers across the country." He came down heavily on Congress led UPA government at the centre. He said, "Lakhs of tonnes of pulses have rot in government warehouses, but Congress government did not distribute it to the poor and the needy. Rather they sold the stale grains to the breweries for making liquor at 65 paise per kilogram." |

Showers expose holes in monsoon preparedness
Melvyn Reggie Thomas, TNN | Jun 13, 2013, 05.01 AM IST SURAT: The very first round of showers in the Diamond City has exposed loopholes in the preparedness of local civic body to deal with problems that come with monsoon every year. While the construction of flyovers, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) continues, it is the commuters and pedestrians who are facing a difficult time when it rains. The roads have become muddy and slippery besides being dotted with potholes and the pools of dirty water. At places like Puna Kumbharia, Sachin, Pandesara, Katargam, Udhana Magdalla etc. where the construction of flyovers and the BRTS project is going on, people have been facing problems of traffic jams, water-logging etc. To add to this, the contractors of Surat Municpal Corporation (SMC) have not leveled roads around hospitals like Asutosh Hospital etc. after digging them for laying drainage or water pipelines. The main entry to the hospital has been literally blocked due to big potholes and heaps of mud leading to inconvenience to the patients and their relatives who are unable to even park their vehicles properly. The situation at Navsari Bazaar, Sagrampura, Kailashnagar, Udhana Magdalla, Katargam, Varachha, Puna, Kumbharia etc. is pretty similar. SMC sources said municipal commissioner M K Das convened an urgent meeting of senior officers including the head of all the seven municipal zones to take stock of the preparedness for the monsoons. Das has given an ultimatum to each of the zonal chiefs to personally visit their respective areas and submit the report on the shortfalls in the monsoon preparedness. "We have been asked to submit a report on the pre-monsoon preparations in our zone. The heavy showers have made the city roads muddy and there are complaints of potholes and the non-completion of the work for the laying of the drainage and water network," a senior official said. |

Hi-tech buses to ply on Surat from July 12
Melvyn Reggie Thomas, TNN | Jun 14, 2013, 11.17 PM IST SURAT: A long wait by tens of thousands of residents of Diamond City, especially college and university students, to hop on to the latest Euro-4 city buses plying on city roads is all set to end on July 12. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and private bus contractor are preparing to roll out the first batch of 50 hi-tech Blue-Line buses. These include 20 air-conditioned (AC) and 30 non-AC buses in the first phase. The six-year contract has been given to Ahmedabad-based Rainbow Travels, the lowest bidder, which is already running 26 buses for Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) since 2005. Official sources said the outer body of Blue-Line city buses is under construction and that it is expected to be competed by the end of this month. However, tenders have been issued for setting up 40 new bus stops, LED system at the bus stands and bus terminals in the periphery of the city. In the first phase, 50 Blue buses will operate on routes like railway station, Chowk Bazaar, Bhagal, Mahidharpura, Nanpura, Athwalines, Piplod, Parle Point, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, City Light, Vesu, Magdalla, Dumas, Majura Gate, Udhna Darwaja, Pandesara, Bhestan and Sachin. SMC will provide four open spaces to the operator for parking buses on rent at the rate of Re 1 per sq metre per month. The depots will be located at Ring Road, Adajan-Pal, Katargam and Varachha Road. Executive engineer (traffic cell) Jaydeep Chauhan told TOI, "The AC and non-AC buses will be easily identifiable. The AC buses will have a yellow strip" According to Chauhan, the operator will charge as per Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) rates for travel in all the AC and non AC buses. Monthly pass holders will get 20 per cent and physically challenged, senior citizens and students 40 per cent concessions on fares. |

There are numerous Cricket Grounds in and around Surat. But, unfortunately Surat with 50 lakh people still doesn't have International Cricket Stadium (which I consider the most important facility for a city like Surat to give it global exposure). Recently SMC had floated plan to construct a Cricket Stadium in Pal area. But, as of today city is without any Stadium.
I had posted many pictures of VNSGU Cricket ground and Lalbhai Stadium several months ago. |

I heard they restated the work a while ago. Dr. mall is opened but I dont think stores are opened. does mall have any luxury-branded stores? I dont think that mall will ever have any branded stores. It is just gonna be a simple shopping center. Last edited by harshdhru_12; June 17th, 2013 at 06:06 AM. |
