Maybe if you guide them with some sort of rails, both on the ceiling and on the floor

just like if you were locking the carpet in the steps of a stairway

I made a quick model on sketchup ( I have some free time ), I personally find this "curtains" very nice, they also look beautiful to repair from the sun if used as a ceiling in an open space / balcony etc, so in horizontal from wall to wall

I live in a house and naturally there are blinds over all the windows and balcony and patio doors. But if I lived on a floor in a highrise that is taller than any other buildings, then I probably don't need it, otherwise I'd still use the curtains for the absolute privacy.

If you don't feel relaxed about running around naked through your house or apartment I would say for privacy related reasons you would need some curtains.

Yes, and rolling shutters wich are very popular in Belgium for houses. They don't seem to be popular for houses in other European countries, only for shops.

I once got the question of an American if burglary was common because people had rolling shutters

If you have theses rolling shutters installed in Canada, people would think you must have some valuable stuffs in the house and actually would become the target of burglary. Also, the burglars usually come from the doors and seldom break the window because by doing that it will make too much noise.

Most houses in Belgium have sliding windows in the back. A popular method is removing a brick under the window and try getting in the lock that way.
