The Liberty Memorial and Museum is the world's largest, and the United States only, museum devoted to the history of WWI and the fallen soldiers. The money to build the memorial was raised by the citizens of Kansas City through personal donations.

The memorial was designed by H. Van Buren McGonigle, who was selected through a national architectural competition. The complex includes the 217-ft. memorial tower with sculptures symbolizing courage, honor, patriotism, and sacrifice; two museum buildings containing the names of Kansas City soldiers who died in the war; the Great Frieze depicting the timeline of the war; courtyards and staircases linking the structures; two large fountains; a grand lawn; two Sphinx-like sculptures with wings covering their eyes; and underground museum; and the memorial wall featuring bronze busts of the five Allied leaders who where present for the groundbreaking in 1921.

The completed memorial was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge on Armistice Day in 1926. In 1998, Kansas Citians passed a tax initiative that provided $30 million for the memorial's restoration, and $14.7 million for future maintenance.

The memorial mixes classical and art deco designs, and Indiana limestone was used in construction. Steam rises from the top of the tower, and red up-lights shine at night, giving the impression of an eternal flame. The location of the memorial is on a hilltop south of the central business district of Kansas City. An observation deck exists above the Great Frieze at the base of the memorial, as well as a lookout near the top of the memorial tower.

The memorial is opposite Kansas City's Union Station, which is the second largest rail station remaining in the United States. When it was completed in 1914, Union Station was the third largest train station in the USA (after Pennsylvania Station, and Grand Central Station).

To the west of the memorial is the former United States Post Office Building, completed in 1933. When constructed, it was among the largest postal buildings in the USA. It is currently undergoing renovation and expansion and will soon serve as a US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) processing center.

I'm giving it a 10 of 10. It has the history, the urban setting, and the beauty.

I gave it an 8/10. I like art deco architecture. It is a cool relic from an era that probably stands as Kansas City's golden age (so far).
