Edition: January 16, 2014 | Volume: 42 | No: 1

Guaynabo invests $11.1 million in construction of newest member of National Association of Automobile Museums
At a cost of more than $11 million, Guaynabo Mayor Héctor O'Neill recently inaugurated the Transportation Museum, a three-story 30,000-square-feet modern building at the intersection of PR-837 and Cecilio Urbina Street, near the Mario Quijote Morales Coliseum.

Already admitted as a member of the National Association of Automobile Museums, or NAAM, the new museum features documents and memorabilia of the island's transportation history, from pre-Colombian times to the construction of the Luis A. Ferré Expressway and the Urban Train. O'Neill said, "The museum's main mission is to preserve objects that serve as reference for present and future generations and educate the general public."

According to its website, NAAM is a professional center for automobile museums and affiliated organizations that supports, educates and encourages members to operate according to professional standards of the museum industry.

Visitors will be able to appreciate a permanent exhibition consisting of a short film detailing the history of Puerto Rico's transportation, a restored road from 1920 and articles from different transportation mediums, such as ships and airplanes. Also on display are the vehicles used by Guaynabo's past five mayors and a wax replica of the mayors themselves.

Meanwhile, there will be rotating exhibits that will change every three months, as part of efforts to retain the public's interest in the museum. "The rotating exhibits will take place with the intention of maintaining visitor's interest in the museum. These visitors will also enjoy a fine deli area on the third floor, free Wi-Fi and a memorabilia store," the mayor said.
