Basic amenities centre at Tiruchi offers deluxe bathrooms, an AC waiting hall and cloak room

Keeping in view the ever rising passenger traffic at the railway junction, the Tiruchi Railway Division has constructed a Basic Amenities Complex which was inaugurated here on Wednesday.

Taking into account the lack of deluxe facilities inside the station, the new amenities centre provides for the travellers, a full fledged bathroom inclusive of shower and round-the-clock hot water connection. The centre also includes an air-conditioned waiting room and cloak room. A laundry centre, refreshment stall, beauty parlour, boot polishing service and book stall have also been proposed.

According to P. V. Vaidialingam, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, the functioning of the centre has been leased out to a private contractor who is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. The Railway will directly monitor the progress of the centre on a regular basis, he said.

K.Subramani, supervisor at the centre, said, “Facilities that are not already available at the junction are provided at the centre.” With priority given to maintenance of the building, Mr. Subramani said, “We will try to maintain the centre as good as new, with passenger comfort coming first.” The spacious air-conditioned waiting hall has started to attract passengers already.

Nominal charge

A nominal charge of Rs. 15 is being levied for an hour's use of this waiting hall. A similar AC waiting hall is available on platform number one.

Unlike the waiting hall on platform number one which is open only for valid ticket-holders, the waiting room here can be used by any visitor irrespective of his possessing a train ticket.

R. Arockiadas, a Coimbatore-bound passenger, said, “The room is very spacious and comfortable with the sofas provided.”

Proper upkeep

Impressed by the latest development at the junction here, R. Swetharanyam, a regular traveller said, “Compared to the bathrooms inside the station, the bathrooms here are more spacious. I hope they are maintained well.” The charge for using the bathroom is set at Rs.10.

The fee for depositing luggage at the cloak room is Rs.15 for 24 hours without having to produce a ticket of travel.

The facilities here can be used by the public without producing any ticket.

125 residents including women from two panchayats arrested

About 125 residents, mostly women, of Alathur and Keelakalkandarkottai panchayats in Tiruverumbur Panchayat Union were arrested on Thursday morning after a crowd of over 300 villagers blocked the Tiruchi-Thanjavur National Highway for about half-an-hour protesting against the move to merge the panchayats with the Tiruchi Corporation.

They cited the presence of 460 hectares of farm land, the consequences that will arise in the form of denial of benefits accruing from the central and state schemes meant for rural parts, and the compulsion to pay more taxes as reasons for their opposition.

MNREGS

Villagers were not prepared to forgo the welfare schemes and benefits, particularly the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, Indira Awaz Yojana-group housing scheme, subsidised power, and provision of free livestock for the poor.

They justified their agitation complaining that the district administration had not invited them for talks even a month after they had presented a petition opposing the move and for retention of status quo ante.

The residents in the two panchayats had also conducted black flag demonstration and boycotted grama sabha meeting.

The demonstrators dispersed after revenue department officials arrived at the spot and assured to convey their displeasure to the government. The arrested persons were released later in the day.

Dear friends
this photo is taken behind the trichy airport but in between melakalkandarkottai and kilakuruchi road . The wall what we see, is the end of the campus and this is the canal flowing through. The runway may be extended beyond this campus and the canal I think. The land between this campus wall and canal is agricultural land.
OMG!! Am I the only one who sees a huge security risk here? Do they monitor this side of the fence with hidden camera?

The photos cries out for attention that is needed badly.

300-bed super speciality block to come up under hospital upgrade project

The long deferred upgrade of the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital is closer to bearing fruition with the state government's proposal to establish a Rs.100 crore-super specialty centre at the government in the revised budget for 2011- 2012 announced on Thursday.

The proposed 300 bedded super speciality block would house 10 speciality departments in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, medical and surgical gastroenterology, according to A.Karthikeyan, Dean, K.A.P.Viswanatham Medical College.

“A long pending demand of the people of Tiruchi district has been fulfilled today. The announcement comes as a boon to the people of central Tamil Nadu,” Dr. Karthikeyan, told The Hindu . Some of the above mentioned specialties exist at a rudimentary level presently.

According to M.A.Aleem, Vice-Principal of the college, this is the first major fund allotment for the hospital since it was attached to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Medical College.

“The allotment is the highest for a medical college hospital by the state government,” he said, adding that trauma care in the hospital is also likely to be augmented. Expressing their thanks to the Chief Minister, both physicians credited the efforts of District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan for forwarding the proposal.

With the proposed upgrade following the announcement of enhanced facilities at the Srirangam Government Hospital, healthcare in the district has been accorded a push concur activists. “We are thankful to the Chief Minister for implementing the proposal. It is a most welcome move and our only appeal is for the speedy implementation of the project,” said M. Sekaran, President, Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations. “This has been a long pending demand of consumer and service organisations. We have been meeting politicians and bureaucrats at every possible opportunity,” he added.

The upgrade of the 150 year old government institution into a super specialty centre has been oft mooted and shelved over a period spanning ten years.

A Rs.100 crore central government project to upgrade the hospital on a par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, was subsequently shifted to Salem, provoking protests by political parties and consumer organisations alike.

An upgrade at an investment of Rs. 50 crore announced by previous state regimes also did not materialise.

Encroachers find safe haven beneath road overbridges

The road over-bridges across railway level crossings at Thennur and Palakkarai in the city built at the initiative of the former Union Minister late Rangarajan Kumaramangalam brought much relief to motorists in the city. Though people living close to the bridges did not mind a few minor inconveniences on account of the bridges, they hardly bargained for the clutter and squalor that characterise the public space beneath the bridges now.

The civic administration soon after the opening of the bridges about six to seven years ago had announced that the open space beneath the bridges would be put to good use, for creating a parking lot and to raise public gardens. Neither plan has come to fruition yet.

Instead, the entire space along the bridges on the Thennur High Road, the Heber Road and the Madurai High Road have now turned convenient shelters for encroachers for varied purposes. Platform vendors, roadside eateries, juice stalls and cobblers form an assorted group of encroachers. Truck and goods van operators also find it a convenient place to park their vehicles. In a few places, the open space with the pillars at regular intervals make for work sheds for a few artisans eking out a living from bamboo products.

Timber, hardware shops and steel welding units occupy most of the space on the narrow service lane along the bridge on the Madurai Road. Open drains, road bumps and encroachments by an assortment of shopkeepers have constricted the space on the service roads along the two bridges. Worse still, several dingy corners beneath the bridges have become convenient garbage dumping yards for locals. The Ramakrishna Theatre corner near Thennur has been converted into an open garbage dump and urinal.

All along, the space beneath the bridges is largely unlit. Residents complain that the poorly-lit stretch on either side of the Thennur Railway crossing has now turned into a hangout for anti-social elements. Chain snatching incidents are frequent occurrence on this stretch though many of them allegedly go unreported to police. Sakunthala Srinivasan, a resident of Anna Nagar and president, Tiruchi Payaneetalar Iyakkam, who has long been fighting for provision of street lights and conversion of the open space into gardens observes that the road stretch along the TANGEDCO office in Thennur has become totally unsafe for women during nights.

“We have grown tired of representing the matter to the corporation. Provision of street lights is an absolute necessity to check criminal activities. The open spaces under the bridge have also become a big garbage dump yard,” she says.

Mrs.Sakunthala said that the Payaneetalar Iyakkam and Mahalir Mempattu Mandram had offered to the corporation to sponsor and maintain a garden beneath the Thennur bridge. “But the corporation is yet to act on our request over the past seven years,” she says.

Local residents also complain over the chaotic traffic conditions on the service roads along the bridges. Clogged as they are by encroachments and other impediments, the service roads are also in a poor condition with gaping manholes at several places. Motorists invariably use the wrong side of the service lane along the Thennur highway. Consequently, the service road on the other side is used for two way traffic, often resulting in traffic snarls and bottlenecks, they complain.

Today I read reports that were exactly what KT feared. It says that even the recently installed security systems do not work.

The report complains about one particular official in charge and blames him for every thing wrong at Trichy airport.

I think it was Dinakaran newspaper.

More trains to reduce burden on chord line

With the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) according his clearance for the operation of passenger train services in the newly laid broad gauge track from Nidamangalam to Mannargudi, people of delta districts are expected to get a few new trains, including a overnight express train to Chennai and passenger trains to Tiruchi.

The construction work of the new railway station in Mannargudi has already been completed and the Tiruchi Railway division has also set up a satellite passenger reservation centre in Mannargudi town.

Though the BG conversion work on the Tiruvarur – Mayiladuthurai section is in progress, the Railways is likely to introduce a direct train service to Chennai from Mannargudi via Thanjavur on the main line initially.

At present, the Tiruchi – Chennai day express, Kumbakonam – Chennai Rockfort express, Rameswaram – Chennai express; Nagore – Chennai express (all daily trains); Madurai – Chennai express (weekly twice), Tiruchendur – Chennai weekly express are the trains connecting the delta districts with the state capital.

Southern Railway is said to have sent a proposal to the Railway Board for introducing a new overnight train from Mannargudi to Chennai via Thanjavur. The recent visit of A..P.Mishra, member (engineering), Railway Board, to Mannargudi to inspect the new infrastructure facilities at the station, apart from the track, has raised the hopes of all the three districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, of getting an additional train. A cross section of the travelling public of Tiruchi district feel that the introduction of an additional overnight train on the main line will immensely reduce the burden on the trains passing via Tiruchi on the chord line, in particular on the rockfort express, which is at present originating from Kumbakonam.

T.R.B.Rajaa, Mannargudi MLA, submitted a memorandum to Mr.Mishra in this connection. Besides, he also demanded introduction of an overnight express train from Mannargudi to Coimbatore. At present Janshatabdi express and the Nagore – Ernakulam overnight express are the only trains connecting delta districts with Coimbatore, apart from a few passenger trains. The overnight express train will be of great help to the people of Tiruchi district, says Esthar, a housewife.
