It may be little noticed at times, but San Diego is becoming a great city.

The always sold-out event draws some 130,000 attendees from around the world, including top Hollywood film and TV producers and major celebrities.

The project’s 608 condos would also boost property tax revenue and the 198,000 square feet of retail space would increase sales tax revenue.

During Monday’s hearing, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce endorsed the $750 million project as an economic boost, and Circulate San Diego said it dovetails with the dense housing called for in the city’s proposed climate action plan.

Other supporters said One Paseo would provide Carmel Valley the community nexus it lacks while also helping to fill glaring voids for mid-priced housing, shops and restaurants.

Some also said One Paseo, which will include a cinema and 10 acres of open space, exemplifies the kind of lifestyle preferred by today’s young and successful workforce.

New Bankers Hill condos: $1,000+/foot??!

The condo market must be back.

How else can you explain a developer's plan to build a 13-story, 63-unit project next to Balboa Park where prices are projected to average "north of $1,000" per square foot, a neighborhood record?

Zephyr Partners has begun demolishing the 55-year-old Sixth Avenue Medical Center at Palm Street and plans to start construction on "The Park" in June with completion by early 2017.

Zephyr cofounder Brad Termini, who worked on Liberty Station in Point Loma at Corky McMillin Cos., said prices have not been set and the sales office won't open for another 60 days, but his projection would put the units, ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet, at between $1.5 million and $3 million or more.

"Our buyers are used to living in luxurious spaces," Termini said. "We think they're moving down from large homes and we want to provide them an urban lifestyle but to give them a much more luxurious unit than what's typically associated with an urban lifestyle."

A $31 million investment is remaking the Port of San Diego into tourist attraction

What the Tourism Authority calls $31.1 million in Port of San Diego improvements felt like much more during a weekend trip in late February with a friend. I saw the beginnings of the transformation during a trip with my wife back in May 2013, but two years later, the metamorphosis is truly remarkable.

Ballpark highrise coming to East Village

Starting next month, construction will get under way on one of downtown San Diego’s largest housing developments, following the approval Wednesday by Civic San Diego of the $250 million project.

Located east of the ballpark along Park Boulevard and Imperial Avenue on what is now a surface parking lot, the planned 37-story apartment tower and surrounding low-rise buildings are part of Ballpark Village, originally conceived several years ago by JMI Realty, the developer of Petco Park. JMI, which is partnering with Lennar Homes, is former Padres owner John Moores’ development company that master-planned the district around the ballpark, which opened in April 2004.
