Christopher Wray Building Re-Development

Sorry if this has been done...l totally missed this news as l ways out of the country at the time, but finally, one of Birmingham Historic Buidlings will be coming back to life...and in such a great position next to Eastside Park and hopefully HS2.

Such exciting times for Eastside and glad this building will see new light, remembering also opposite Masshouse 2 and the courts!

New one on me but this is one of the positives about the park .. all three prominent old sites being brought back to life! -Curzon Street Station, The pub, and this... Looking good!

I have a friend who has been talking about this project. He is involved with one of the Architect groups who have come in with designs for it. He said the nightclub venue has prooved to be very popular with C-Zero....

maybe this is the link to digbeth we need!

One would hope that access through the building would be easy, passage ways from bartholomew Row through to Fox street, with the land at Fox street planned for a new art gallery/museum which is sure to help the Christopher Wray Building which could become almost like an entrance to Eastside.

What might be interesting is maybe to fully incorporate the alleyway between the CW building and NTI Birmingham....maybe open this side of CW building for some tables and chairs can be here for coffee etc as people walk through to Eastside.

A council improvement for this area in my mind would be the building of some wide steps at the corner of jennens Road and bartholomew Row to walk down to this building from the road above and stop people just walking up and down a grassy hill.

As for the CW build, it looks an eco friendly new build will replace the structure closest to the Eastside park wall, as this part of building is not protected.

very happy that this could happen, the bar/club idea in the vaults below sounds very interesting.

hope it goes well for them.

Great write-up! I agree about that scruffy piece of scrubland / bushes on the corner - get rid and put a series of steps there.

And l never knew where Hive is and Masshouse 1 used to be a church and graveyard!

Hope they took the bodies away!

Yep, that messy scrubland on the corner of Jennens and bartholomew has to go...looks like it was planted by a 2 year old! Nice stone steps, lighting and NICE trees and plants please.

Birmingham city council...if you are going to Landscape around the city....copy the trees, plants and Hornbeam hedges used in EastSide Park!

As for CW building, the FB page has some great photos, really interesting building and some great old maps and description of how area and building used to look.

The Bodies were long removed. Masshouse was a replacement of a 1960's development.

seems like whole area around CW building was highly populated area, lots of back-to-backs, a school right behind the CW building and the church opposite the CW building st barts as detailed in the image below

http://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/images...ews-Church.jpg

seemingly area suffered heavy from bombing, the church which had been empty since 1937, was blown up on a night raid in 1941.

Alas the CW building has survived all that and come through the other side to now hopefully see a new future.

Applying for Listed Building Consent so they knock down area closest to Eastside park (white) wall, which is the most modern bit of the CW building.

In discussions with architects over designs for redevelopments, applications to be put in early part of 2013

Post on Facebook from Christopher Wray:

An excellent meeting the planners and Conservation Officer today to discuss proposals for the site. Glenn Howells Architects have been working on the scheme, which is resi led, but with a mix of uses on the ground floor, and the creation of new public spaces.

Scaffolding should be going up in the next month for some works on the facade, and also to stop water coming in behind the front parapet.

Inside, the buildings have been cleaned up considerably, and we have found most of the lights! About 100 old crates are currently for sale on eBay as we try and clear out surplus junk.
