Demolition plans approved for two former South Tyneside businesses
Verity Ward 23 November 2016

Demolition plans have been approved to knock down two former businesses as part of the £100million regeneration plan for South Shields.

An application, submitted to South Tyneside Council’s planning department, for the demolition of numbers 3 to 7 Keppel Street in South Shields, has been given the gree light. The site used to be home to a travel agent’s and a snooker club. The plans, which have been submitted by Muse Developments and South Tyneside Council, will see a new building – known as 5 Keppel Street – being created.

It will be a three-storey building and used for retail, business and financial services. The application stated the application proposes is for a retail and office development in the town centre. It adds: “It is an important development in its own right, and beneficial for the town of South Shields. “5 Keppel Street will provide a key location for businesses wanting presence in the newly regenerated South Shields town centre.”

It adds: “More importantly, it compliments the statement of intent by South Tyneside Council in the continual regeneration of the town.” This new building will be next to the town’s future transport interchange – which is earmarked for the Post Office site. The Royal Mail Delivery office will be relocated to West Walpole Street on the Rekendyke Industrial Estate. The application added: “

The provision of 5 Keppel Street alongside the Interchange will begin the regeneration of the town centre and establish the principle objectives of the 365 Masterplan.”

Demolition work begins on former South Shields travel agents

The former Dawson and Sanderson Travel Agents, in Kepple Street South Shields

The latest stage of the regeneration of South Shields town centre has started with work to demolish a landmark building which housed a holiday firm.

Specialists have begun stripping-out of the former Dawson & Sanderson travel agents, next to the former Post Office, in Keppel Street. The work is the precursor to the complete demolition of the two-story brick building - part of the site of a planned transport interchange. The property, along with the Post Office, are expected to be reducved to rubble and the site cleared by February.

Dawson & Sanderson relocated to its current site in the nearby Denmark Centre in November, 2014.

Councillor John Anglin, Lead Member for Regeneration and Economy, said: “Now that the Post Office and Royal Mail have relocated to King Street and to Laygate, the council is embarking on a programme of demolitions to enable the delivery of the Transport Interchange. This will initially involve some internal works prior to the physical demolition of the buildings later in the year.”

A report of the demolition of former travel agents states: “The building will be demolished on site generally by mechanical methods. Hand demolition will be considered where required next to adjacent properties and pedestrian access areas. All pedestrian movement around the site will be managed by the demolition contractor in accordance with an approved pre-demolition method statement. Demolition of the buildings is required to construct the new Transport Interchange.” The adjacent 3 Keppel Street which links through internally to 22 Fowler Street is to be retained. Work is expected to begin in the spring on the interchange, which marks the start of the regeneration plan’s second phase.

The former post office building

Demolition work is set to begin on the former post office building on to make way for the next phase of the £100million South Shields 365 masterplan.

The wreckers will move in later this month on the former Post Office and Royal Mail building, and the former Dawson and Sanderson travel agent in Keppel Street.

South Tyneside Council said the buildings must go to make way for work to construct the new Transport Interchange, which will start next Spring. Hoardings are being erected around the area of town centre to mark out the demolition site compound.

Bowmer and Kirkland, who helped deliver The Word in Phase 1 of the masterplan, has been appointed demolition contractor. The demolitions programme is likely to last around three months, during which time businesses will be open as usual. T

The hoardings around the site will show artist’s impressions of how the new transport interchange will look, as well as vibrant new artwork reflecting the vision for South Shields and showcasing its fantastic visitor offer.
