Quote:
By Mick O'Reilly, Senior Associate Editor | Published: 00:00 January 7, 2012

Abu Dhabi: The purchase of a major stake in Irish carrier Aer Lingus will be discussed between Etihad's Chief Executive Officer James Hogan and Ireland's Minister of Transport when the two meet before Monday, Gulf News has learned.

The meeting, likely to be held tomorrow, will try to resume talks which followed initial discussions in September.

Ireland denies Etihad talks on Aer Lingus stake

Quote:

by Andy Sambidge on Jan 8, 2012

Ireland has no plans to discuss the sale of its stake in Aer Lingus Group to Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, a government spokesman has said.

Leo Varadkar, the Irish transport minister, will meet with Etihad CEO James Hogan during a visit to the Gulf, but will limit talks to “tourism matters" John Carroll, the spokesman, told Bloomberg on Friday.

UAE's Rus Aviation receives second converted freighter

Quote:

The latest addition to Rus Aviation's fleet has been named Darina

by Robeel Haq on Jan 9, 2012

Rus Aviation received its second converted freighter from EADS EFW last month, supporting a multi-million dollar fleet development programme.

The Airbus A300-605R, which was delivered to the company’s Sharjah headquarters, follows the handover of a previous Airbus A300-600R converted freighter in July last year.

“We believe there will be a full recovery in the air cargo business,” stated Saleh al Aroud, chairman of Rus Aviation.

I think its going to be about 50.5 million, less than the 52 million predicted, probably due to the Arab Spring, since most Middle Eastern destinations from Dubai are seeing a decline in passenger traffic compared to last year.

Thanks for the update Face81, has construction started on Concourse 4? Also do you think they are going to move the aircraft stands?

We can also see that number stay unchanged if Flydubai shifts its operations to DWC this year.

I can see EKs organic growth for DXB being right around the same number as what it would lose if Flydubai leaves.

I'm sure DAA will always give us DXB, and DWC figures all together in the end.

C4 has been announced and it's location confirmed, but construction is yet to be awarded - from what I remember it will be one of the last phases of construction at DXB towards the end of the decade..... The aircraft stands will be moved as well, eventually. Scroll back a few pages to see the plans.

flydubai announces its 50th destination

Kyrgyzstan's National Flag

Dubai, UAE; 10 January 2012: Bishkek has been named as flydubai's 50th destination, marking the pioneering airline's entry in to the Kyrgyz Republic and expanding its network to 28 countries across the GCC, Middle East, Africa, Indian Sub-Continent, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe in just two and a half years of operations.

The new service, which is due to begin on 7 February 2012, makes flydubai the first UAE airline to offer direct flights between the Emirates and Kyrgyz Republic. Flights will operate twice a week, departing Dubai on Tuesdays and Fridays, with flights from Bishkek to Dubai leaving on Wednesdays and Saturdays. One-way fares start from AED 990.

flydubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith said: "We are proud to launch our latest services, bringing our destinations in the former Soviet Union to 12. It is also a significant milestone for us as the 50th destination we have announced - quite an achievement since our first flight in June 2009.

"We have already launched operations to a number of cities in Central Asia and we believe Bishkek will be just as well received. We are confident it will prove popular with people seeking alternative travel destinations, as well as offering people in the Kyrgyz Republic a gateway to the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent and Africa through the flydubai network."

The capital and largest city of the Kyrgyz Republic, Bishkek is flydubai's first foray into the Central Asian country and marks the continued rise in demand for flights to previously under-served destinations in Central Asia.

The Kyrgyz Republic has opened its economy to foreign investment in key industries including metallurgy and is developing its tourism potential. Beauty spots such as Issyk Kul Lake are growing into popular tourist destinations while trekking and camping trails as well as skiing bases are developing all over the country, drawing in travellers locally, regionally and internationally.

The Kyrgyz Republic has a growing presence in the UAE thanks to a 3,000-strong expatriate population. Flights to Bishkek will start from February, ensuring they are able to travel home to visit friends and family more often.

Flight Information

Flights to Bishkek will operate twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 February 2012. Flight FZ771 is scheduled to depart Dubai Terminal 2 at 2255, landing at Bishkek International Airport at 0500hrs local time. The return flights leave on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with FZ772 departing at 0620hrs, arriving in Dubai at 0845hrs. One way fares from Dubai to Bishkek start at AED 1,055 and fares from Bishkek to Dubai start at AED 1,020.

Fares include 20kg checked baggage plus one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 7kg and one small laptop bag or hand bag. A seat with extra legroom costs AED100 extra.

Flights between Dubai and Bishkek can be purchased from flydubai's website (www.flydubai.com), its call centre (+9714 231 1000) and through travel partners.

The daily service from Glasgow has always run mainly full even though the basic price of a ticket was expensive at around £650. I have been using the indirect service with KLM via Schiphol as it is less than £350 for a basic ticket which can be upgraded to comfort plus for only £40 with my FB Gold card. I have always suspected that Emirates have subsidised the KLM flight for passengers staying 7 days or more in Dubai. This allows Emirates to target long haul customers travelling to South Africa, Australia and the Far East. I expect KLM prices to rise now as I got an email from Emirates today confirming a lower priced fare structure to Dubai from £438 with a chance to win an iPad2. Just hope they have done away with the 10 wide seating arrangment as it was hopeless and would put me off using the service again. They have introduced a first class cabin but what about a comfort plus section Emirates?

Just to recap, so if EK were given the right to operate daily into YYZ, they would probably switch back to B777-300? Would there be enough demand to keep the A380?

Yes they would keep the 380, EKs long term strategy for YYZ were two flights per day. With only 3 weekly flights alot of pax are redirected through JFK.

Air Arabia has expanded its services to Moscow

Low cost carrier Air Arabia said on Monday it has expanded its services to Moscow from its hub in Sharjah.

The budget airline said it now offers five flights per week, an addition of two flights to the schedule first launched last October.

The carrier now offers direct flights to Moscow on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

"We are extremely pleased to announce the expansion of service between Sharjah and Moscow, which will further enhance travel options for the residents of both cities," said AK Nizar, head of commercial department, Air Arabia.

Etihad lures Emirati cabin crew with short-haul offer

Quote:
by Claire Ferris-Lay on Jan 10, 2012

Etihad Airways, Abu Dhabi’s flag carrier, has offered to exempt Emirati cabin crew from overnight flights in a bid to boost the number of UAE nationals taking up roles at the airline.

The state-backed airline said UAE staff would be allowed to fly exclusively on short-haul routes, avoiding overnight stints that could be in breach of “cultural sensitivities”.

The offer intends to “ensure Emirati nationals for whom an overnight stay away from home might pose a cultural problem were not dissuaded from applying for a cabin crew position,” a spokesperson for the airline said in an emailed statement.

The airline declined to specify whether expatriates applicants would be offered the same opportunity.

The A343 has 8 wide seating, although the cabin is smaller so the size of the seat is about the same. The B777 all have 10 wide seating.

There are no plans for an extra zone - if you want extra comfort use miles to upgrade to business like most others in that section of the cabin.

Yeah, i read it before, but i forgot. But thanks for the info
Also, didn't they once have plans to increase the cargo capacity to 3 million tonnes. Have they cancelled that plan, given that most of the cargo operations will be shifted to DWC.

Do you think FlyDubai will move so soon? I know its been announced before, but shifting to DWC might slow down its growth, since DWC wouldn't be convenient for many passengers.

Why would Emirates subsidize the KLM flight?

I think they will still be upgrading the cargo capacity as planned in addition to ramping up operations at JXB.....

Not sure they care about the convenience aspect to be honest.... I expect the move to come towards the end of 2012 and will probably be phased, just as EK did when they moved in to T3 at DXB.....
