That looks quite good, I like the 'summery' feel to it, probably because of the colour of the right hand building.

Having this, and the various other good stuff on the Gateshead side, really shows how much something needs to be done about 'HMS Calliope', don't you think, to complete the picture?

Oh, and then there is TBT also!!

Yep. And Brett's Oils factory, which did have a replacement office/residential scheme proposed a few years ago, but it was unfortunately rejected. Gateshead council have produced a masterplan for the site though so it seems something will happen there in the future.

That looks really good, it's about time something was built down there if you ask me and this looks spot on.

Didnt Absolute Leisure go bust? I'm sure we discussed that at some point in the old uber-thread?

There are a couple of diggers on site aren't they? Have they just been sat there for an age?

As for Absolute Leisure well I have my opinions about them that I probably should keep to myself, however this is a nice development & I hope someone takes it off their hands & it gets built...

Not ultimate leisure, absolute leisure. I forget which is which...

Delighted something is being built there at long last but I am undecided as to whether I like this project or not.

The red building looks good, it's in keeping with the Swing bridge, but for the green/blue building, I just don't get it, nor like it. It might just be the green/blue cladding, I might like it if it was red like the one next door is going to be.

Really? I think the green building looks good, and the red building looks pretty bland and boring.

Taken as a whole though, I think this development is a good one.

Permission for Gateshead office complex is withdrawn
May 8 2010 by Adam Jupp, The Journal

A KEY plot of land on the banks of the Tyne is to remain undeveloped for the forseeable future after plans for a £10m leisure complex collapsed.

Developer Absolute Quays wanted to create an office and restaurant block on land next to the former berth of the floating Tuxedo Princess nightclub on the Gateshead side of the river.

Planning permission for the Hillgate Quay scheme was granted by Gateshead Council this time last year but there has been no progress since then.

The authority had also offered Absolute Quays a deal over the long-lease of the land where the proposed development was to take place.

But council bosses withdrew the offer last week after the company failed to take them up on it, which means the plans have fallen through.

The deal involved Absolute trading in the lease it has for an empty house on the site for one covering the entire plot, which would enable the scheme to go ahead. Now, the Allied Irish bank has placed the company into receivership over a mortgage it had granted for the house, after learning there was no longer any prospect of the project happening.

This is a great shame.

When we lost 'the Boat', I was pleased we were going to get a half-decent development there.

Now, we will just have a vacant plot in a prominent location.

Agreed, North East 4 Ever. Looks a decent scheme and would have filled in a gap on the Gateshead Quays.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to actually carry out the development on the site of the old Boat?

Potential new site for a smarter looking trimmed down HMS Calliope?

Would certainly delight the council if they could knock down the current building

Surely Calliope should and will move away from such central sites? There's no need for them to be on such a prime section of the river. I agree that them moving here to a decent building would be preferably though!

I must admit that I'm a bit puzzled as to what would work well on that site in the current climate...
