Reliance Retail to shut 16 of its 20 Apple iStores over design row

Reliance Retail will shut 16 of its 20 exclusive Apple iStores as several of them don't comply with the global store design specified by the maker of iPhones and iPads, which could disrupt the US company's bid to intensify sales efforts in India, where its share of the smartphone market lags way behind leader Samsung.

On the other hand, the move will allow Reliance Retail to step up the focus on its new multi-brand format, Digital Xpress.

Reliance Retail, part of Mukesh Ambani-headed Reliance Industries Ltd, used to run the largest chain of Apple Premium Reseller stores in India, offering the complete range of Macs, iPads, iPhones and iPods along with software and accessories. The company will keep just four iStores open -- one each in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Kolkata.

According to three senior industry executives aware of the plans of Reliance Retail and Apple, the Cupertino, California-based company has been unhappy with the pace at which Reliance had expanded Apple stores in the last four years. Reliance wasn't enthusiastic about complying with Apple's strict standards and what it regarded as the highhandedness of the US company since it was not getting the desired returns, said the people cited above.

Apple's new norms include a standardised design with higher ceilings, more white LED lighting, wooden floors, new display tables and a particular size.

Puratos India to scale up capacity

Quote:
When Puratos India, a subsidiary of Belgium bakery, confectionery and chocolate products manufacturer, Puratos, conducted a survey to understand consumer preferences in India, it found that the Indian palate was keen on flavours from the past.

Based on consumer insight, the company’s research and development arm has developed products with ingredients such as jowar, bajra and corn. To foster similar innovations, the company will be setting up two new experience centres, besides scaling up its production capacity in Mumbai.

We are in the process of scaling up our capacity in Mumbai to meet the demand from the industry. We will also be setting up experience centres in New Delhi and Bangalore. This will help us reach out to our consumers which include MNCs, small and medium bakers, among others,” Kanwar added.

Lamborghini plans to drive down South

Quote:
Italian ‘supercar’ manufacturer Lamborghini will set up shop in Bangalore next year, says Pavan Shetty, Head of Operations at Lamborghini India.

Bangalore was the natural choice because of its easy access to major cities, including Chennai, Kochi and Goa, says Shetty.

He added that it was important for buyers in the South to know that after-sales service is at hand.

Service will never be more than 48 hours away for any customer, says Shetty, explaining that a team will fly in with equipment and attend to the customer’s needs.

It is a long plan of french gaint retailer Careefour in Binnypet Mall

Cautious expansion
Carrefour has been cautious in its India expansion, mostly launching one cash-and-carry store a year. It has not been able to find an Indian partner yet for starting multi-brand stores though the Union government allowed up to 51 per cent foreign direct investment in the segment last year.
