^^ don't know what its for yet, My guess would be to run advertisements of some sort downtown. Its the first big screen to go up downtown and should liven up the place at night although I agree it does look somewhat out of place as is. Probably a better place would have been on the side of the TSTT building. (where they used to hang the huge banners) A second big screen is supposed to go up at the GCP upon its completion.
If this trend keeps up it might look like time square in a while.

Apparently the people over at Town and Country Planning agree that it looks out of place.
With regards to it being on top of a KFC, lol, that particular KFC is notorious for being the KFC which sold the most chicken in the world for several years running, so its no surprise that they would be the ones to put up such an expensive advertising billboard.

Questions over KFC screen

The screen looks out of place because its not incorporated into the building properly, it sticks out like a sore thumb. All they needed to do was to install it lower in that recess right below it and then make the big column with the logo on it taller to match the height . That alone would make it look much better and less ad hoc, which it looks like now, like someone said, "hey I have a bright idea lets put up a huge screen on the roof"

Trinidad & Tobago | Projects & Economy

Trinidad Receives $150 Million Loan from China for Hospital Project

Trinidad and Tobago has received a $149.6 million concessional loan from China to build the Children’s Hospital in Preysal.

The hospital will reportedly be outfitted with “state-of-the-art medical equipments for diagnosis and treatment.”

It will be a “priority healthcare facility,” according to Acting Foreign Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal.

“We are hopeful that it will also attract patients from the wider Caribbean and the Latin American region,” he said. “It is also expected to be an integral part of this government’s ‘Hospital Physical Infrastructure Development Strategy.’”

Chinese Ambassador to Trinidad Yang Youming said he hoped the loan would help improve the country’s healthcare system.

Port for La Brea in next three years, says Sharma

The Government will be seeking expressions of interest for a port facility which will be built in La Brea to handle an anticipated billion-dollar shipping demand, Transport Minister Chandresh Sharma said yesterday. Speaking at the weekly post-cabinet media conference, Sharma said the port will be built on 200 acres of land.

Saying T&T continues to attract investors, Sharma said Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar recently said T&T was looking to $TT20 billion worth of investment stemming from the Panama Canal expansion. He said this could see a projected 300-plus ships calling at T&T. The Port of Port-of-Spain and Pt Lisas ports would be unable to accommodate the added demand, he said.

Sharma said it would be premature to give a cost figure for the planned port at this time, but expressions of interest for the port development will be invited and after this Government will budget a figure for the plan if required. He said the projection is for the port to be completed before the end of 2015.

The planned port was mentioned briefly in Finance Minister Larry Howai’s budget speech. On whether it will provide jobs for La Brea residents, Sharma pointed to the declining unemployment figure, saying T&T would need all its workers soon. Asked if the La Brea port would be another reason to make the Point Fortin Highway necessary, Sharma said he “thought that was already communicated.”

Ministry of Planning aims to improve construction process

Minister of Planning and Sustainable Development Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie wants to reduce the red tape surrounding construction projects. However, he said that will be on condition that all new projects stay true to the rule of law and reason.

He warned that his ministry would not be as kind to projects that did not provide sufficient parking, for example. Tewarie made his statements during the recent ceremonial unveiling of a cornerstone plaque to mark the start of construction on a seven storey building to be located at 5 Gray Street, St Clair.

He was on hand to commission the start of the uniquely designed, multi million dollar project which will be completed by May 2014. The project is a wholly-owned venture of Ginamco Limited and will be financed through a loan facility with Republic Bank Limited.

In a brief address, Amer Haidar of Gunamco Caribbean Limited was high in praise of the interest paid by the minister to the project. He said he was deeply grateful for the assistance which Tewarie provided to help make it a reality. “Minister Tewarie is a man of vision who understands the role that the private sector is required to play in the development of T&T,” he said.

Haidar said the project was his way of expressing his confidence in the economy and people of T&T and he hoped many other private sector stakeholders would follow his lead and break ground on much needed construction projects across the country.

Govt to spend US$3b on maritime projects

Government is embarking on two major maritime projects as a cost of US$3 billion. This is just one of the several initiatives aimed at creating an investment climate for trade to take place. Trade Minister Vasant Bharath announced when he addressed a conference on Improving the Ease of Doing Business in T&T at the Hyatt Regency in Port-of-Spain. He said his ministry is on an aggressive path of putting T&T on the world stage and the two projects are being funded by two local private sector companies with an international presence.

Bharath said he could not identify the two companies as he was subjected to a confidentiality clause. The two projects are a transshipment port in La Brea at a cost of US$1.7 billion and a maintenance ship repair facility just off Sea Lots. The second project is estimated to cost US$1.2 billion.

“We are in the final stages in doing due diligence and would be taking it to Cabinet in about two to three weeks time,” Bharath said. He said government’s role in this initiative is to create the enabling environment by fast tracking approvals, including the Environment Management Authority certificate and the granting of licenses for the required land. Once approvals are granted work should begin in 2014, he said.

$1.8b loan for health, sport centres

Story Updated: Mar 15,2013

THE construction of a number of local sporting and health facilities with a $1.8 billion loan from China will employ at least 50 per cent local labour and materials in most aspects, Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal said yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago has entered into the loan agreement with China Exim Bank, an export/import financial institution which in 2011 offered over $6.3 billion in loans to the region in an effort to deepen its ties with the Caribbean.

Work has already begun on some phases of the country-wide project, which will include the George Bovell III Aquatic Centre, a cycling velodrome, a tennis centre, three multi-purpose sporting facilities and the Children's Hospital at Couva.

The Aquatic Centre and cycling velodrome will share a compound with the Ato Boldon Stadium at Couva, which is also set for refurbishment. Earthworks are about 40 per cent complete on the compound of the stadium.

Moonilal, asked about the People's Partnership's previous declarations that it would avoid the use of foreign and Chinese expertise and labour, said a clause has been entered into Government's contracts with the Chinese that stipulated the use of at least 50 per cent local content.

Construction jobs coming with $$ to build facilities

Published:
Monday, March 18, 2013

SHASTRI BOODAN

More construction jobs are coming to T&T. So said Rudranath Indarsingh, the minister in the Ministry of Finance, who is also the Couva South MP. Indarsingh was speaking at a town meeting on Saturday at the California Government School. He said the Government last week signed a $1.8 billion loan with the Exim Bank of China for the construction of six state of the art sporting facilities including an aquatic centre at Balmain and The Couva Children’s Hospital and Burns Centre.

Indarsingh said the projects would require at least 40 per cent local input and labour which he said was good for the local construction industry. He said the hospital should be completed next year and the dualling of the Rivulet Road should commence this year and also create more jobs. Indarsingh said his constituents are in full support of the Government amendment to the Defence Act and are standing behind them to legalise the operations of soldiers in giving assistance to the policy.

He said it was the ambition of the opposition PNM to see the government give up on crime and use measures to distract the population just o score political points.

Multi-nationals to invest US$3 billion in dry docks

Published: Thursday,March 28,2013

Two multi-national companies plan to invest US$3 billion over the next three years in construction of two dry dock facilities to boost T&T’s maritime sector. Trade Minister Vasant Bharath, who made the announcement yesterday, said the facilities are to be located at Sea Lots and La Brea respectively, but he could not divulge further details on the companies involved.

“I can’t tell you specifically who they are, but it relates to two maritime companies with international connections who are looking to put down dry docking facilities in T&T for ship repairs and ship maintenance,” he said “There is no government investment involved. This is private sector completely. We are just going to facilitate with the approvals, which is the biggest issue we will have.

“I am due to sign an MOU with one of the organisation’s very shortly, in fact we are working on the MOUs for both, whereby Government will commit to a certain time frame and those organisations will commit to certain time frames for the investment.

Government’s side of it will be to facilitate, through the natural process, their approvals on time, because that’s a bug-bear...when you have to get EMA, Town and Country and WASA approvals. If these things get stuck in the system, it creates problems for investment dollars to flow to T&T,” the minister said.

Most likely, the one at Sea Lots will be the Sullivan Island Dry Dock - a pretty ambitious project if I may comment - complete with shipping facilities, high-rises and corporate office buildings etc. Interested to see what is going to constructed in La Brea - Maybe the Amsterdam Island Dry dock, originally to be built in Guyana? Restaurateur: $20m spent to open four Wendy’s

Published: Thursday, March 28, 2013

Photo: Marcus Gonzales

With four Wendy’s restaurants opened in two years, Dane Darbasie, managing director, Desk Restaurants, has credited an improving economy and changing eating habits as the reasons for the franchise’s success.

“Outside of Puerto Rico, T&T would be the most competitive quick service restaurant industry in the Caribbean. The market has been able to accommodate new entrants because the T&T public has become very sophisticated in their purchasing pattern. They do not stand for bad hospitality and poor service in terms of food quality. The brand that can deliver a consistent experience will rise to the top,” he said.

He spoke to the Business Guardian last Thursday at the opening of the fourth Wendy’s restaurant in Montrose, Chaguanas.

Construction boom in South

...$500m entertainment centre takes shape in Corinth

Published:
Sunday, May 12, 2013

With the launch of JT Allum and Company’s $500 million C3 Centre at Corinth, a major construction boom is under way in south Trinidad. The project, set for completion in 2015, is in addition to the ongoing construction of the $7.5 billion San Fernando to Point Fortin highway extension and the soon-to-begin San Fernando Waterfront project.

On Thursday, Planning and Sustainable Development Minister Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie joined JT Allum executives, including managing director Christopher Mack, to turn the sod for the multi-million-dollar project. He commended the JT Allum company for its investment in the shopping and entertainment complex.

“This contribution here by the Mack family is appreciated. The local content, the boost in labour in construction, as well as permanent jobs and the enlightened green practices are much appreciated,” Tewarie said. He said JT Allum and Company, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, “has been synonymous with strong business ethics and has generated successful operations in the supermarket and real estate industries over the years.”

The company, incorporated in 1943, was founded by Humming Bird Gold recipient Carlton Mack, an immigrant from China. It is now managed by second and third generation members of the San Fernando family. Tewarie said the fact that the $500m investment was coming from the local private sector demonstrates confidence in the strength of the economy.

Udecott chairman Jearlean John: TT$19b to be spent on 74 projects
Published: Thursday, May 23, 2013

Nadaleen Singh

With TT$19 billion to be spent on 74 projects in the coming months, people in the construction sector have a “good bit of work” coming their way, says Jearlean John, the chair of the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott).

Speaking at the May 6 appointment of the new Udecott board at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad hotel, John said Udecott has a mandate to execute 74 projects costing just over TT$19 billion.

In an interview on Tuesday at the offices of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), of which John is managing director, she responded to those in the construction sector who argue that Udecott was responsible for heating up the economy during the construction of the Government Campus Plaza.

John said: “It’s not just more buildings. The buildings are useful buildings. Udecott will continue to do useful things. There are a number of projects on Udecott’s radar that will do tremendous good for the national development.
