I really like the last one with the water on the James and Richmond in the background. Very nice

Here are a couple I ran across while looking for wallpaper images. It looks like Richmond avoided a lot of the urban "renewal" that gobbled so much of the urban fabric surrounding the downtowns of most other southern cities.

Thanks JRQ. Took that a year ago last January during an unusually warm evening. We haven't had many of those this year!

gwiATLeman: I don't know other cities well enough to compare but I know renewal did claim some pretty old neighborhoods but yes, for the most part the City has kept the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods on the old grid system. It's a small City but its dense and with plenty of character/interesting architecture.

As for urban renewal, most of the buildings in the foreground have been lost. Richmond has lost tons of buildings but the thing that Richmond did right is that (for the most part) they didn't tear down stuff with out a specific plan to replace it (sometimes with crap like an interstate, other times just a bigger building).

The stuff in this photo was replaced by the Downtown Expressway and a couple high-rises and a canal.

If you want to compare this to the aerial posted a few items down, this view is the area at the top right corner of that photo.

Beautiful houses along Monument Ave, though the daily commute to work can be a bear :

Comparison of a pic posted above, and an older pic I found on the net. The star and arrow are for directional reference.

Haha nice one on the last photo...I guess a golden crane is better than nothing at all lol. The colors look great against the buildings.

Will be there in a matter of weeks for an art course. Can anyone recomend any art like places (mueseums) and any great night spots?

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has just reopened after a huge expansion (see updates about the museum and its collection in the SE Development section of SSC). The Anderson Gallery on the campus of VCU usually has a pretty good show mounted, there are dozens of galleries in town along Broad Street, Main Street and off of Hull in the Manchester area of town. The University of Richmond has a nice gallery too. There is a really big art scene in Richmond but like with most places, the exhibition schedule gets a bit lean during the summer months. Here are some links to some cultural and alternative sites that can give you some information about the city...

So, where are you taking these art classes?

Those old aerials are amazing. I wish we would have stuck with the original plan to route the interstates further out from the city; so much of our urban stock wouldn't have been lost to urban renewal.

Welcome to town.

Did you say you were coming to Richmond for school (VCU?) or job? Or perhaps both or neither? lol...

Thank you : ). I'm going to VCU for a year to finish up my Bachelors, then I'll test the waters out for grad school there....either there or Virginia Tech, which is closer to my family and stuff. But it's signed and everything so starting this Fall, I'll be right in the heart of Richmond : )
