WHat are the slanted panels with the neon lights outside of IDS supposed to be?

Ok... neon-ish. that wild colorful lighting looks really out of place on Nicollet.

One of the most "Barren" looking streets I've ever seen....anywhere!! Open this street up to regular traffic and stop wasting money ($50 million) every 10-15 years on this nonsense! State street in Chicago was dying for 20+ years and so were the businesses on that street....The city finally got smart and tore out the stupid island type sidewalks and opened the street up to regular traffic! It's booming and it's alive and once again people want to be there again!

it does have a concrete canyon, barren look. but the transit shelters havn't been constructed yet and the buses are not back for a couple weeks. it looks dead because it's not complete until it returns to being a transit mall.

it's too bad they had to cut the sidewalk pavers from the budget. it provided a visual break and just looks better.

Next summer it will look better with the addition of the bus shelters. Plus the tree groves will be green/leafy so it will look less stark. Having those empty storefronts filled with retail will help liven it up. I agree the flooring is a bit on the grayish/ dull side. In general, my favorite design element of the new mall are tall street lights and the way they undulate with the curvature of the mall's bus lane. The top of the light fixtures have color changing LED "beacons" which will look beautiful at night (when they get them to work properly!). Having more holiday lighting would also cheer it up for the winter months...

With any project like this, there will be some things that work well and other elements of the design that are somewhat of a flop. Some of the not-so-good things can be eliminated or modified over time. The good news is the infrastructure underneath the mall has been modernized so the next re-paving (which hopefully will have more color and higher quality materials) won't take nearly as long to be built. lol!
