So am I reading this right? The Greens dude is saying the developers should make the park benches more comfortable for homeless people?

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/bri...17-p4ywik.html

I'm all for finding solutions and placement for the homeless but I think this guy is cracked.

No he is saying they shouldn’t install features which are purposely designed to stop homeless people sleeping on them.

I think the basis of that article is rubbish, and I disagree with his comments on the features design to stop skateboarders, I have no issue with these since it skaters can damage the furniture.

but in relation to the benches and the railings placed mid-way, it’s a controversial feature employed in a few cities these days which is aimed to make the benches unuseable as a bench for homeless

i think the original intended purpose devices are useful to stop homeless people using the benches/furniture during the day.... and i agree with that purpose.

It’s to stop them sleeping on it, they don’t disappear during the night. And that’s when people are looking for somewhere off the ground to sleep

And people wonder why the Greens can't be taken seriously. Hard to believe that ratepayers are funding the salary of this idiot.

"Hostile architecture" that's a new one for the lexicon.

It's not a "new" term. Hostile design and hostile architecture are intentional and they've been around for a long time. Unfortunately it's gained a lot more popularity over the years.

Personally, I find the "I don't care about homeless people as long as they're out of my sight" attitude incredibly sad.

you're not wrong, but that wasn't the original design intention. somebody sleeping on a park bench in the city at 2am bothers nobody......... the same person sleeping on the same bench at 10am bothers lots of people.

sadly i am old enough to remember these sorts of things being introduced. they were introduced to solve the "10am problem", and at the time the "2am problem" was explained away as an unintended consequence. it might be different now.

It's going to be our prime tourist destination in Brisbane so it's no place for undesirables... like Green's members.

Of course anyone who doesnt think the solution is encouraging/facilitating the homeless appropriating public furnishings must be 'not caring about homeless people'. Because the only two options are 'not caring' and 'approving of them sleeping all over public furniture'.

At the risk of derailing the thread, I never said that they were the only two options. But having worked in the social space for many years, that "out of sight, our of mind - but I'll pay lip service every now and again to make myself feel better about myself attitude" is overwhelming.

Leesome are you suggesting that Malt and KJ Brissy have never done anything to benefit homeless people apart from saying they care? And are using this to justify their distaste? Well I Never!

Just a caveat... I'm not saying i have done anything

Leesome is a good man, he has done a lot of work with a few organisations to assist those in need. I myself work with the homeless but they are not homeless anymore.

I have seen the proposal signs around the area near the old library. I'm still not keen on the old library being a theatre but, whatever.
