New-look Globe to be back this Puja

Iconic Theatre Makes Way For Mini-Mall With Multiplex, Retail Stores, Food Court

The iconic Globe Cinema opposite New Market which dates back to the early 19th century is reopening in a new avatar after curtains were pulled down seven years ago. The gigantic singlescreen theatre has made way for a mini-mall with a twintheatre multiplex, over 100 retail stores and a food court.
The project that retains The Globe brand is targeting a Puja-eve inauguration.

“We've grown up watching English movies at Globe, Lighthouse, Jamuna, Tiger and other theatres in the vicinity of New Market. Sadly , hardly any single-screen theatre survives now. Most have being converted to other commercial ventures. We wanted to revive at least one cinema hall and when the opportunity came, we grabbed it,“ said Nitin Kumar Jain of Dhansri Abasan Pvt Ltd that partnered with Goldstar Enclave Pvt Ltd to acquire Globe Theatre Pvt Ltd from a Parsi family in Mumbai.

Originally a wooden opera house that was established in 1827, it was sold to E M Cohen in 1906. Cohen converted it into a movie theatre and named it Globe Cinema. It was one of the first few theatres in Kolkata to regularly screen English movies.

Rajkamal Chaurasia, director of Arti Cinemas that will operate the twin-screen multiplex, promises the best viewing experience in the heart of the city. “The first auditorium with 244 seats will sport a 3D projection system and Barco Auro 3D sound that is making its debut in Kolkata. The other theatre with 197 seats has a 2D projection system and Dolby Digital sound.
UFO Digital Cinema is our projection partner,“ said Chaurasia, who is hoping to screen the Hrithik RoshanKatrina Kaif action thriller `Bang Bang' that releases on October 2.

Chaurasia said Globe Arti Cinemas would continue to focus on English movies with a steady mix of Bollywood to pull the audience. The two other theatres that are still operating in the belt -New Empire and Roxy -screen Hindi flicks. One of the biggest box office grosser that was screened at Globe before it shut down was `Titanic'.

Arti Cinemas that operates a twin-screen multiplex at the Fortune Plaza mall in Durgapur and is giving finishing touches to the threescreen plex at Sun City mall in Barasat, has worked out a competitive pricing strategy with tickets starting Rs 99 for morning and night shows, Rs 150-180 for weekdays and Rs 220-250 for weekends.

While the multiplex will occupy 10,000sqft on the third and fourth floors of the five storied project, the ground, first and second floors will have 110 shops spread over 40,000sqft. In addition, there will be a 10,000-sqft food court.
Some shops at New Market, including Suit Bazaar, Nighty Corner and Modal Stores have also taken space at the facility. For car parking, The Globe is in discussion with Simpark, the basement parking lot at Lindsay Street, to accommodate 48 vehicles.
