MASTERPLAN | Aarhus Ø (New Urban District) | U/C

I hope you Copenhageners don't mind the obvious inspiration for the thread title.

A new harbour district

Aarhus Docklands is an ambitious project that will transform a former harbour area in the city of Aarhus to a new burstling city district with canals, housing for 7.000 people and work places for 12.000 people. The construction and sale of building ground were halted by the financial crisis in 2008, but construction finally began in December 2010 and since more projects have been announced and gone under construction.

In Danish:

Quote:
Visionen hviler på to grundelementer.

2013

What to expect? Let's debate the future development of Aarhus Docklands!

Infrastructure

Aarhus docklands have two access roads for motorized traffic. The primary is located at the Nørreport intersection and a secondary access road next to Østbanegården was inaugurated in 2010. Furthermore multiple small bridges will make Aarhus Docklands accessible for pedestrians and cyclists. The planning of Aarhus Docklands does not allow construction of multi storey parking houses meaning every builder has to include parking hidden below ground.

An extension of the light rail system in Aarhus is planned but not yet decided by the light rail consortium (City of Aarhus, several Eastern Jutland municipalities, Central Denmark Region and the State of Denmark). It will most likely be part of the 2nd stage and the rapid development of Aarhus Docklands will only contribute further to its likely approval. An extension to Aarhus Docklands is expected to cost approx. 100 mio. DKR.

The light rail will connect the Northern most square Jette Tikøbs Plads with Nørreport as seen on the map below.

That's nice! I like the plan, in fact it looks very similar to a plan I drew myself, except I can't see a light rail, and where's that line? It should be integrated with the coming line!

Great thread, and great intro, Asbjørn. It is good to see, that so many of the projects are allready U/C. And it is almost surreal to think about, that so many other projects in Århus are also U/C or close to, considering the financial crisis and all.

Great thread indeed, gives a nice overview of these fine project.

It's also about time something's happening (constructions'wise, not thread'wise ), since this has been under way too long now. I took these photos back in march 2003 when I still lived in Aarhus:

It is expected to be part of the 2. stage of the tram project. It will be located in the middle of the main boulevard that U can see in the overview-picture and the boulevard is from the start constructed with a width so the tramrails can easily be added. An illustration of this is shown below:

Thanks all. This thread was a long time coming.

If you have any corrections or additions then just post them here. I do not have exact heights on several of the buildings, which I would like to have.

Otherwise post any news regarding Aarhus Docklands here and let us debate the good/bad development happening on the harbour front of Aarhus.

Marina House today:

The cladding has started. It doesn't look anything like the renderings though.

Thanks for the photos, Jimmy. Do keep posting them here. I'll just supplement with a picture from the Navitas webcam. I might make that a weekly tradition:

Hi Asbjørn, the height of Marina House is 32 m. And the height of Grundfos kollegiet is actually 44,5m (kote 44,5 according to localplanning. First it was 41m, but it was changed to 44,5m. Page 20 in lokalplanen)

I went to the docklands today to actually shoot a picture of the future boulevard connecting the docklands to downtown. You can see that the median is very wide. It will be this width all the way to the city center and in the future the two tracks of the tram will be placed here. A little bonus picture of lighthouse is also shown

It is so great to things finally starting to happen in the Aarhus Docklands. I remember hearing about these ideas of changing the container harbor to housing and office buildings way back in the 90's when I lived on Nørreport just around the corner from pier 2 and Havnens Perle.
A that time the ideas seemed like a fantasy in the minds of a few city planners. And now it is all happening.

It's a massive and impressive thread Asbjoern.
I hope that I can make a similar thread about Køge that can be just as extensive.
But I must just wait for the projects to start up in 2013.
