SERI KEMBANGAN: The first International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) Convention to be hosted in Malaysia was officially opened here today.

The four-day event, comprising of one-to-one meeting sessions, networking opportunities and golf playing, saw a total of 146 buyers from 38 countries and 200 suppliers from 16 countries gathered to represent both sides of the golf tourism business.

They include the golf tour operators, golf resorts, golf clubs, hotels and tourism boards from various destinations in Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said being the first Asian country to host the convention would boost the country’s reputation as a business tourism destination of choice, while promoting Malaysia as an exciting golfing destination in this region.

“In 2011, Malaysia recorded RM286 million in golf tourism revenue, exceeding the initially forecasted revenue of RM249.5 million,” she said, adding that this year’s target was to achieve RM290 million.

Dr Ng said the golf tourism industry was a lucrative business which attracted “affluent, high-yielding tourists who generate significantly above-average per capita revenues for a destination”.

She added that the country could efficiently cater to avid golfers with its 207 golf facilities, ranging from short 9-hole courses to 54-hole complexes.

The facilities, she said, represented an investment of over RM20 billion as well as significant employment nationwide.

Her speech was read by Tourism Malaysia acting director general Datuk Azizan Noordin.

Also present at the event were Malaysian Golf Tourism Association (MGTA) Executive Director Christ Syer, MGTA Pro Tem Chairman Paul Gibbons, IAGTO President Peter Walton and Malaysian Golf Association President Datuk Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor.

Damai Golf aims to be above par
by Jenifer Laeng, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on July 12, 2012, Thursday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/07...-be-above-par/

UCHING: Sarawak’s premier golf course, Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC), has completed upgrading works on its Ocean Nine which would be of interest to a wide range of golfers, from regulars to foreigners looking to an exciting round of golf while they were on holiday here.

Designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer who considered the picturesque and unique golf course as one of the toughest test of golf, the news got the local golfing fraternity in excitement.

“The golf course upgrading exercise commenced on 15th July 2011 and we have now completed the Ocean Nine course upgrading as part of our efforts to golf course refurbishment,” General Manager of DGCC Zulkifli Othman informed The Borneo Post in an exclusive interview yesterday.

Generally, the works involved hole by hole upgrading of greens, bunkers and sub-soil drainage on fairways commencing with Hole 10 of Ocean Nine.

“Our course is still playable, as temporary greens are provided for greens which are being upgraded. To date, we have completed the entire Ocean Nine and we would be organising a soft launch to mark this completion on 15th July 2012,” remarked Zulkifli.

The course refurbishment is in fact, ahead of schedule. The tentative completion date of the course refurbishment is June 2013.

“In addition to the course upgrading, we have also completed various upgrading works in relation to our clubhouse such as our Sweet Swing Café and roofing works. We would like to thank our members and clients, who have continued to support us despite the course upgrading,” informed Zulkifli.

When asked about the quality of the new greens at Ocean Nine, members and patrons gave their thumbs up.

Datuk Mazelan Bugo, one of the Club’s life members remarked, ‘The new greens are very good, with good speed. They are suitable for tournaments.’

Other life members, Kuintan Mohamed Sepawi and Joseph Yong added that the new greens looked beautiful, with great colour and texture.

Meanwhile, the Kurchener couple from Perth, Australia who recently played golf almost everyday during their two weeks stay with Damai Beach Resort commented that the new green is excellent and as good as any greens found at top golf clubs in Asia.

Zulkifli remarked, ‘This is an exciting time for us. With the upgrading, it will help to being the golf course to the next level of quality and positioning, and by extension, to make Damai as the preferred golfing destination for golfers and tournament groups in the future.’
